Joseph Y. Cheney retired in May as a member of the Florida Parole Commission. Ed Sides and then Dick Husband '26 advised us. The Tallahassee Democrat editorially said in part, "He will leave us a fine example of a good system for obtaining good men to make good records in helping men with bad records. Cheney is one of the original members of the Commission which was established 19 years ago to take the release and rehabilitation of convicted criminals out of the old hit-or-miss system of politics and sympathy and put them on a basis of expert, deliberate, man-to-man study.

"Joe Cheney won his place on the Commission by virtue of his personal and professional qualifications, with no consideration of political pull. He has held it that way ever since and his behavior, along with that of his fellow members, has kept the Florida Parole System as free of politics as any agency of government. This is proved by the fact that Joe Cheney is a rarity in the upper echelons of Florida government. He is a Republican and he was when he was appointed by a wholly Democratic State Cabinet."
