As the month of March nears, the class wishes a happy and healthful birthday to H.C. Abbott, George B. Davidson, BillDent, Vol Jenkins, Fred Libbey, Clarence Meleney, and M. Myers. I hope I haven't skipped anyone. It wasn't intentional. Ralph E. Samuel and Co. and Neuberger and Newman, both members of the N.Y. Stock Exchange, combined last December to form the new firm of Neuberger and Berman, Ralph E. Samuel and Bernard Stein as partners. The new mutual fund management company will act as an investment adviser and distributer of Energy Fund, currently managed by the Samuel Firm.
A word about the Dartmouth Educational Association. It is a non-profit corporation organized under the laws of Massachusetts on October 16, 1896, for the purpose of assisting needy students preparing for and pursuing courses of study at Dartmouth College. Down through the years the association has worked quietly and has had outstandingly successful results. Fourteen members of our class belong and have helped in the association's fine record.
"Bart" and Renza Shepard departed for Florida where they witnessed the takeoff of Apollo 14 at Cape Kennedy, Fla. Their son Alan is captain of the crew. Their scheduled take-off was delayed due to bad weather at the moment. From there Bart and Renza will go the manned space center in Houston, Tex., the control center of the flight. The town of Derry N.H., is taking the news of the flight in stride. As one of Derry's citizens said: "Sure we are proud of Shepard. But I think his first flight was the most important of them all. That's when we made our first giant step forward. That made us 'Space-town, USA.' " After a thirty-minute delay the flight got successfully away. Here's hoping they get there and back.
The Alumni Fund takes on added significance this year. Colleges all over the country are having financial problems and Dartmouth is no exception. It behooves us all to make a special effort and give generously, especially so as our ranks have thinned during the last few years and many large contributors have left us. If there ever was a worthy cause this is one.
Those of you who are thinking of our 60th reunion in 1973, will please get in touch with the secretary, who will forward it on to the committee which I hope is in existence at this time. It also will be good to receive a few remarks about yourself and family.
