This (all of '60 finds the Chicago Association popping with ambitious plans, and with ample determination to make them realities.

Good omen of success is a long-to-be-remembered picnic-outing on August 24, at the beautiful 19-acre estate of Ralph Johnson '41. Ninety-three happy brethren came for golf, baseball, horseshoes, swimming, and to enjoy a superlative steak-and-corn dinner - all accompanied by liberal sluicing of excellent beer.

That the picnic started the fall season with a bang is literal truth. Ralph, ideal host, provided fireworks to go with a king-size bonfire; and several rockets were of bomb persuasion. Few if any inhabitants of that opulent countryside saw the Dartmouths at play; but it's dead certain that all within miles heard them.

In recognition of Ralph's fine hospitality Jay Buck '50, Association president, presented him with a handsome silver bowl. Ralph established himself as worthy successor to the late beloved Louis Leverone '04; and this picnic was in the tall tradition of many memorable outings at Louis' farm.

Hanover guests were that popular bibliophile Herb West '22, Ralph's guest; Thayer School's Prof. Russell Stearns '37, guest of Al Louer '26; and, via Western Union, John Sloan Dickey. Undergraduates, included Al Rozycki '61, backfield ace, and Chuck Dayton '61, Rugby captain. Several members of the new class of '64 attended as guests of the Association. Other welcome travelers were a Rockford contingent: Ed Keeler '11, Karl Williams '23, Dick Countryman '24, and Bill Knight Jr. '49.

Special praise went to Chairman Dick Loewenthal '53 and his able co-workers Jack Senne '53 and John Price '57. Consensus is that no better picnic dinner was ever served anywhere.

Among other summer triumphs was retention of the local Ivy League golf trophy, won last year by those deft practitioners, Hunter Hicks '33 and Gene Howard '49. Neither of our heroes was at his impressive best, but they were plenty good enough.

Always an interesting subject, the Association Scholarship Fund had another gratifying year, according to its chairman, Syd Craig '40. Two Chicago scholarships are in action: one to Alan Rozycki '6l, who has made a truly outstanding record; and the other to Robert J. Szakonyi who will enter College this fall as a freshman. Szakonyi was president of his class at Wells High School, Chicago, captained the football team and compiled an excellent scholastic record.

Slated for stepped-up effort is the High School Awards program, guided by Stacy Hill '41. Each year these awards go to outstanding juniors in selected schools. More schools are being added.

Another project of interest is an Association newsletter known as The Hill Winds. Issue Number 1, mailed August 1 to announce the picnic, was well received.

Visiting firemen are reminded that every Monday there is a Dartmouth table at the Chicago Real Estate Board, 105 West Madison, 4th floor. Food - excellent; company - the BEST.
