It's getting to be a habit with those Hanoverians around the "big greens"! For the third time in a row the Dartmouth team won another year's custody of the Chicagoland Ivy League Alumni Golf Bowl. HunterHicks '33 and Eugene A. Howard Jr. '49 turned in a net 144 at Barrington Hills Country Club, July 31, 1959, to win - and received the customary engraved replicas of the Bowl as prizes. Alan R. Johnston '37 and J. A. McWilliams '35 turned in a net 148 for Princeton to win the runner-up prizes. Close behind were Yale and Brown at 149, to tie for third. The Tiger Twosome, however, also stalked off with the prizes for best ball low net of 64.
Columbia Alumni were hosts. Our thanks go to Garrett Bergen (and especially to George W. Lutton) for the privilege of playing his beautiful course and enjoying the gracious hospitality of his club. As winning team, Dartmouth alumni will sponsor the Sixth Annual Tournament in 1960.
However, a new hazard has appeared on our fairways! Some thorns in the cool Ivy Green! A challenge was received at the club house in a telegram from the local Cactus League alumni as follows: "Recently organized Cactus League Universities of the southwest respectfully challenge Ivy League Alumni Golf team with the Adobe Trophy to winner in Chicago area. A team now being formed and definitely will shape up during or before May, 1960. Schools represented will be Arizona, Arizona State, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico, and Texas Western." At dinner that night all Ivy participants voted unanimously to accept and it is hoped that the challenge and our Sixth Annual Ivy League Tournament can be held concurrently, in the interest of saving time in an always locally crowded season.
