A newsletter from Hanover reminds me sentimentally that another college year has started and another group of freshmen hopefuls has descended on Hanover for the great educational experience that leads to membership in this select alumni body. It was twenty-one years ago that most of us hit Hanover, and I could wax nostalgic about those formative days; each of you has his own memories of first days at Dartmouth, I'm sure, but reading about the current group, including their full week of orientation, reminds me of our lack of orientation. I could hardly get the College to give me a room (and too bad it did, someone probably thinks).

Anyway, the Dartmouth ties that bind are really binding. When everyone else in his right mind was holed-up taking the day off at home, Sam Bullock and I practically ran into each other right in the middle of Erie Avenue, Philadelphia, while Hurricane Donna made strong passes at the Quaker City, That would have been a sensational collision which nearly everyone would have read in the Philadelphia Evening Bulletin (and certainly in the Inquirer, because Herb Harrigan is an editor there, and one whom I intend to call sometime). Sam and I were going about the city, he doubtless en route to a hospital, and I to a business meeting. The best we could do was a quick windowsdown chat at a stoplight, and even then, incoming rain was too much. Act well your role, the poet says, and Sam and I were doing just that during Donna. If you ever see a Pennsylvania license MD8-43, the driver will be Samuel C. Bullock, psychiatrist, who refuses to tell this secretary much more than name, address, and license plate number.

Note to former Mass Hall residents: "Mass Hall has a completely renovated interior. Now entirely fireproof, it sports brilliantly painted corridors and suites with private shower and bath facilities." Twenty-one years too late.... Fletcher no longer occupies his basement store. During freshman week he sold used furniture from the Deke House porch. Kevin Kenny, comment please.

Our capable treasurer, Don Reich, has forwarded his treasurer's report, indicating a thorough job of collecting dues from us. I expect that after the executive committee meeting on October 15, Don will have more to say about class dues.... Incidentally, don't forget to make payments on your Capital Gifts pledges. I keep forgetting and some patient one in Hanover keeps writing PLEASE on the reminders.

George Tillson has been appointed Bell Telephone of Penna., district commercial manager in suburban Philadelphia. After service in the CBI theater, George joined Bell as a student engineer in 1946; later became assistant manager, Wilmington, 1948; manager West Chester, 1950; senior staff assistant central Philadelphia, 1956; public relations supervisor-advertising, Philadelphia, 1957; and commercial supervisor-development, central Philadelphia, 1959. Last time I saw George was at a Dartmouth-Penn rally around 1949 in Philadelphia. George is married to the former Violet Neal of Chillicothe, Ill., and they have two sons, Roger, 13, and James, 7; and two daughters, Judith, 11, and Margaret, 2. The Tillsons live at 1009 Lamb Road, Sacane, Penna.

Dan O'Connor, to close out an earlier item, did not get elected state senator in Indiana, but he did have a priceless political baptism running against an opponent who was 1) a native; 2) the incumbent; 3) an organization man; 4) a veteran of the Indiana political scene. I understand that Dan shook up his opponent with a vigorous campaign, doing what perhaps many of us would like to do with deadwood politicians except we lack Dan's determination. More power to our redheaded classmate, and don't count him out of future political battles. Incidentally, can you guess his sons' names?

Tony Farrell is a Republican candidate for the State Senate from Windsor County, Vt. Tony's background includes three years overseas with the Eighth Air Force, a year in Paris with CARE, a year teaching in Canaan, N. H., and many years in the Holstein cattle business in Vermont. If I correctly understood the Bradford, Vt., paper, Tony is quite interested in developing winter resort activity in Vermont. Kathleen and he have five children - William, Brigid Ann, Margaret Teresa, Kathleen, and Marcia Ann, all residing in Woodstock.

While in Miami in September, I called Norman Askey, who was on a business trip. Mimi Askey, just over the hurricane fright (and you can't imagine how south Florida suffered from it), proudly announced to me the arrival of son William George Askey on March 22, 1960 —their fifth child. Norm travels Florida for American Standard Radiator Company. Tried to reach Gail Grant in Miami - got no answer at PL7-2882.

Don and Sandy Kingsley are now settled in Lambertville, Mich., along with Scott, Chris, Beth and Jill. They are expecting their fifth child. Notice how this class seems to run to fifths? I'm several laps behind.... If your teen-age children have you at the end of their rope, you might read the September tenth Saturday Evening Post article, "Why Do They Misbehave?" by Edward T. Hall, Headmaster of The Hill School, Pottstown, Penna. Reprints of this penetrating analysis are available free by writing The Hill School.

By this printing Ruth and I will have attended the 1943 executive committee meeting in Hanover. A Hanover pilgrimage at this time of year is pure delight, and I hope we shall have a large turnout of 435. Have a thankful Thanksgiving!
