Greetings to One and All
To loyal sons of Dartmouth, A wealth of Christmas Cheer - A healthful, happy New Year - Good Fortune in High Gear!
To this, '09's dynamic president, Al Newton, adds: "To each and every member of our class: the joys of the season, happiness, and every good wish throughout the year."
William Jewett Tucker
At this season of the year, which marks the birth of the Savior, what could be more appropriate than commemoration of Dartmouth's great spiritual leader, William Jewett Tucker who, for almost two decades, brought dignity and leadership to the college? At the time Ernest Fox Nichols was inaugurated as president, October 14, 1909, Harry Blythe, the poet laureate of 1907, wrote this sonnet to President Tucker:
The ships which set out from the ancient shore Of Truth's vast sea, pause not their onward sweep With change of captains. For, on that stern deep All ships exceed commanders . . . Though no more His voice shall ring above the sentient roar, Yet shall our bark bear on. But we who keep Its sails before the wind - Ah! we shall weep For loss of this one man our hearts adore. O'er all the seas he led us staunch and true, His leadership harks back for many a mile; And can it be that we must say adieu To him who brought us to this treasure isle? Farewell! Ah, no, - the word has too much rue, He would not have it thus - he bids us smile.
President Tucker left his personal mark on the thousands of Dartmouth men with whom he came in contact, and countless numbers of those who preserved their admission certificates with his personal signature have them as reminders of a truly great man. The signatures are authentic with one possible exception - which Jim Tuttle has preserved. When Jim was getting his certificate, the president asked him if he were any kin to Mort Tuttle '97. Jim said he wasn't. Later, Jim looked at the certificate and it was signed "William Jewett Tuttle."
President Tucker was not only a spiritual leader whose chapel talks were an inspiration to all those who gave heed, he was an astute administrator who took an active interest in all matters connected with the running of the college. Never a week went by, according to my friend, Charlie Truman, who was official steamfitter of Dartmouth College for a matter of 47 years, but what President Tucker visited the heating plant to acquaint himself with what was going on.
President Tucker also possessed a hard core of realistic common sense. One incident of his career, which, in all probability, has never been published, concerned a student from China who approached President Tucker asking to be relieved of attending chapel on the grounds that his religion was different from ours and he saw no need for chapel. President Tucker listened carefully, then handed down this judgment: "It's Chapel or China."
Those of us who had the privilege of attending Dartmouth during the administration of President Tucker revere his memory and we shall continue to do so as long as any of us survive.
What a Feed Bag That Was!
Christmas isn't the only time for feasting. On occasion, during the college year, compassionate parents sent their offspring boxes of comestibles that were eagerly devoured by the recipients and their friends. Witness the accompanying shot of four happy eaters - Bill Patterson, Pete Vehmeyer '11, EmileErhard, and Bunk Irwin. The photo was supplied by Bunk's kid brother, Dutch '11. From the evidence, the lads are demolishing one of nature's noble birds - the turkey, sent to Bunk by his doting parents. Bunk, who was originally 'OB at the University of Illinois, transferred to Dartmouth, and remained to graduate with '09. The lads are much better dressed than was the custom in those days, wearing white shirts and ties, instead o£ the usual corduroy pants and flannel shirts, sans neckwear.
As one proponent of the purist style of speaking and writing put it: "They seen their duty and they done it." Congrats, men. You all are a credit to your Alma Mammy.
Big Boy Clarke Tobin '10, who was featured in the November issue of the ALUMNI MACAZINE, at one time during his college career earned his wheat cakes by working at the Doyle Club where he was No. 1 man in the kitchen. "Dish washing," writes a contemporary, "was his 'hobby.' He was so passionately (?) devoted to it that, after every meal, he scooped up all the silver(?)ware from the dish pan, dumped it into his apron, then gave the whole bunch a high toss in the air. When it landed, whether or not in his apron, in that clarion voice of his he'd yell, 'There you are Missus Doyle, the silver's all wiped!' This was usually followed by his favorite comment, 'I may be poor, but thank God I'm dishonest!' So goes a memory of the past."
And now, dear readers, approach the New Year with fortitude. Gosh knows we'll need it, with all the confusion that exists in today's world.
