A disappointing total of 32 alumni, undergraduates, and their dads heard one of the best speakers we have ever had at our Annual "Dutch Treat" Luncheon on Monday, December 28. Our speaker was W. Thacher Longstreth, 1955 Republican candidate for Mayor of Philadelphia and outstanding young independent Republican leader. His talk, "Young Men in Politics," not only related his own political experiences which catapulted him to national attention but was also designed to stir other college graduates into taking an active role in the American political scene at all levels.
By the time you read these words, two other Dartmouth affairs will be history. At our last-Monday-of-the-month luncheon on January 25, John A. Cost, Vice-President of the Data Processing Division of Fidelity-Philadelphia Trust Company, spoke on "Banking Automation."
Our 1960 Annual Dinner was held on Friday evening, February 5, at St. Martin's Clubhouse of the Philadelphia Cricket Club. The speaker was Joseph L. McDonald, who retired as Dean of the College last summer. Dancing to the strains of a four-piece combo followed the dinner and Dean McDonald's speech.
Saturday evening, April 2, is the date our great Dartmouth Glee Club will be singing in Philadelphia. Since it is their first appearance here in three years, we expect an excellent turnout, particularly after their Radio City Music Hall success this past summer. The concert will be given at the Philadelphia Country Club in Gladwyne, and we plan to conclude the evening with dancing.
At this point, it is appropriate to say thanks in print to the gentleman who has done a great deal of work behind the scenes to arrange our various social events and special luncheons during the past year. He is Hiram J. Allman '55, our Social Chairman.
Before you receive the March issue of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE, you will be receiving your dues notice for 1960. We hope that even more alumni in the Philadelphia area will support our local Club's activities during the coming year by paying dues and by attending more functions, so that we can continue our active program and also publish a directory of local alumni.
