Where, oh where have the summer months gone? Here it is deadline time again. What with two sons getting ready to head up to Hanover, it should not hit me as a surprise. But I'm still not prepared to think of fall, football, college, etc. when we in the New York area are putting up with ninety degree weather and the discomfort that goes with it.
Right to the moment, I feel rich as a millionaire. I have a nice stockpile of letters and clippings, accumulated through the summer months. But before I dig into my treasury of news items, I think we should report to you on plans for next June.
Our Reunion Chairman, Bill Coe, has been hard at work, lining up committees of all sorts. Get out a pencil and circle the dates on your calendar right now. You are hereby notified that you will be expected in Hanover from Thursday, June 14, 1962 through Sunday, June 17. This is the weekend following Commencement for the Class of '62. Those of you who have sons graduating at that time might just as well plan to stay right on for the following week, vacationing in Hanover.
Mort Berkowitz and Lanny Moore who together comprise the publicity committee for Reunion, have given me some advance information which I would like to share with you. Some of the committees already organized and functioning include Bill Ashe and Bob Turner on finance, budget and registration; Bob McCoy, Frank Danzig and Al Bryant on music; Justin Smith assisted by John Milne and Russ Stearns on local Hanover arrangements; Don McKinlay handling the special "Hanover Holiday" program; Wayne Ballantyne responsible for the banquet, brunch, and beer supply; and John Maloon will arrange for costumes of some distinguished sort.
In addition to these, another committee has been formed to work as attendance chairmen for various geographical districts. Already on our list are such stalwarts as Bill Dixon in New Jersey, Frank Danzing in Los Angeles, Pat Uhlmann in Kansas City, Bill Cash in Minneapolis, Les Barrett in Boston, Joe Kiernan in Washington, and others yet to be appointed. You will be hearing from these men from time to time about get-togethers in your locality, long before Reunion time. These will help us plan as to who is coming to our Silver Jubilee, how many kids they are bringing, whom can we share a ride with, and such like. So when you are notified about one of the local pre-reunion functions, please try to attend.
Another chairman who is already hard at work is Bill Rotch who has agreed to tackle the monumental task of editing the 25-Year Book. Perhaps you may not be aware that it has become traditional for 25-year classes to publish a book complete with pictures and biographical sketches on all our classmates covering our activities since graduation. Bill will soon be writing to each of you, requesting this information. Since compiling all this information is a prodigious job, I am entering a plea now that you answer him promptly. Or if you can't find the time to do so, at least get your wife to send the information in.
One committee chairman I have left out is one of the most important. His will be the responsibility of preparing a program for the kids, teenagers down to tots. They all will be welcome, we assure you. I hear from friends in '36 that over two hundred of their offspring attended their gala reunion last June. And who has been nominated for this all important responsibility? None other than Carl Ray. Just so we adults won't feel slighted, Carl is working on plans for a "Special Event" for us for Saturday afternoon. By the way, Carl was elected vicepresident of marketing and to the board of directors of Royal McBee Corporation early this summer.
Fred Asher, one of Chicago's leading advertising executives, has been elected executive vice president of John Plain and Company, a leading distributor of gifts, homewares and apparel. Fred joined the firm in 1955 as vice president and director of advertising and since 1956 has been a member of the board of directors. Prior to joining John Plain, he was president of the Chicago advertising agency bearing his name.
I mentioned earlier that we plan to have some regional get-togethers. One will be coming up on Saturday, November 4, at New Haven. Perhaps you are aware that the Yale game will be televised here in the East. Anyway, the Dartmouth Club of New Haven will have a large tent set up close to the Bowl, and we are invited to use this as a central gathering place either before or after the game, or both. There is a small admission charge, for which they provide coffee and set-ups. There will be room for picnics for all of us, so they say. Anyway, let's plan to congregate at the New Haven Club tent. Rog Allen will have details in an early issue of the Mint Bay.
So. much for now. Don't forget to circle your calendar - June 14 through 17 - Thirty Seven's 25th Silver Jubilee!
