It is always with considerable shock that the deadline for this first issue of the MAGAZINE year comes around. It is a distinct and sure reminder that summer is over. Perhaps that is why it is so difficult to collect one's thoughts and material and to compose this column. There is a certain amount of resentment and reluctance in accepting the fact that summer is o'er. And if my prose seems rather forced and the results dry, it's the time of the year and things will improve.
Secretary Abraham Ribicoff named LisleC. Carter Jr. a Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Department of Health, Education and Welfare this summer. Lisle, a graduate of St. John's University School of Law, was legal counsel for the National Urban League when selected for this post and has served on the board of directors of the American Civil Liberties Union. Since 1957 he has been a member of the Board of Corrections of New York City.
Dr. Ted Safford was named medical examiner for Ridgefield, Conn., this summer. Ted has practiced in Ridgefield for ten years, is attending physician in medicine at Norwalk hospital, and is on the courtesy staff at Danbury hospital. He is a member of the American Medical Association, Fairfield County Medical Society, and the American Academy of General Practice.
From the "United States Tobacco Journal" comes word of the appointment of Edward W. Lilienfield as assistant vice president and director of purchasing of General Cigar Co. Ed became associated with General Cigar in 1956 when that company acquired the Jose Escalante Co. of Chicago, a family concern. Ed had served as superintendent of Escalante's factory in New Orleans and as vice president in charge of manufacturing, tobacco, and purchasing.
John Jennings, North Wilbraham, Mass., has been appointed director of market research and new products co-ordinator at John H. Breck, Inc. The Franklin, N. H., "Journal-Transcript" announces that Paul W. Pillsbury received the degree of Doctor of Philosophy from the Eastern University of Michigan last June. Paul is an assistant professor in the Department of English and Speech at that University.
Guy Gannett Broadcasting Services of Portland, Me., announces the appointment of Gene Wilkin as general manager of WGAN-TV. Gene moves to Portland from Providence, R. I., where he was sales manager for WPRO-TV. He has been associated with radio and TV for a good many years; while at Dartmouth, he was program director and staff announcer on WDBS.
William L. Swartzbaugh, dean of students at the University of Pittsburgh, has been named associate dean at Amherst College. Bill holds a bachelor of divinity degree from Yale and a doctor of philosophy degree from Ohio State University. He was director of religious activities and assistant professor of sociology at Denison University from 1949-1952, program director of the Ohio Union at Ohio State University from 1953-1957, and served as director of the student union at Pittsburgh before becoming dean of students there in 1958.
