The sad fact is that some of you have already received notice via Treasurer BarneyOldfield of the decision relative to DARTMOUTH ALUMNI MAGAZINE subscriptions made at the annual fall meeting of the Class of 1945 Executive Committee. You know then, that this was not a haphazard, snap judgment, but one made only after several years of careful consideration and hopeful procrastination. You appreciate also that the Executive Committee, charged with running the affairs of the Class, must fulfill its financial as well as its other obligations to you and Dartmouth. But do you all fully understand the circumstances that have driven us to this decision?
The basic fact is that the DARTMOUTH ALUMNI MAGAZINE, in which you are now reading these words, comes to you simply and solely because you have paid your Class dues (or someone else has contributed in your behalf)? There is no other way to get the MAGAZINE (except by direct $4.00 subscription). Your contribution to capital gifts or the Alumni Fund does not buy the MAGAZINE. I state this emphatically, for I am sure that there is still misunderstanding abroad. So be it!
Next, some interesting statistics. Your dues are $5.00 a year. As of 1961, $3.00 of this will go to MAGAZINE subscriptions and the other $2.00 to defray Class expenses (Treasurer Oldfield's annual report via the Class newsletter explains said expenses). Next, 80% (513) of the Class receives the ALUMNI MAGAZINE, yet only 48% (339) of the Class pays their dues. A little mental arithmetic will quickly indicate that the Class Treasury is operating at a deficit. It is, and has been for some time. Thus the Executive Committee has finally been forced to act.
Lastly, many of you are faithful and substantial contributors to the Alumni Fund and other "giving" programs, thus indicating your belief in Dartmouth specifically and in the future of higher private education in this country in general. I believe that if you give so liberally to this one segment of Dartmouth you are also interested in the activities of the whole College. And the only way to keep abreast of such is through the DARTMOUTH ALUMNI MAGAZINE. Please weigh carefully in your minds the value of this $5.00 dues-ALUMNI MAGAZINE subscription charge. Isn't it worth it?
Sorry to have taken so much of your time on this matter; but it had to be said. Now to the news.
I received a nice letter from Dr. Bob Clark a month ago bringing me up-to-date on his activities. Bob is practicing pediatrics in Flint, Mich., is married with three children, also a horse. States that his few free hours are spent on the golf course or the ski slopes. Likewise in a letter-writing mood was John Leggat whose purpose was to inform the Class and other Dartmouth associates of the arrival on September 24 of John E. Leggat Jr., the Leggats' first child and the first Leggat grandson (brother Dick '48, has four girls). John says he was at the Harvard-Dartmouth game but saw only Lefty Grunditz. Also, John reports that he entered politics in a minor way by successfully running for the Republican State Committee.
Adorning the cover of the October issue of "United States Amateur Hockey" magazine was the proud visage of Scott Parrott, whose Belmont Peewee hockey teams are internationally famous. The magazine contains an article by Scott on how to inaugurate a peewee program in your neighborhood (if you have the ice). If any of you are interested in such I suggest that you contact him for further information. I can highly recommend this program as a practically ideal one, and my enthusiasm would be unbounded if Scott would send more of his products to Middlesex School.
Word has reached us that Don Cutter is serving as an Alumni Trustee of Vermont Academy. The election took place at the regular May meeting of the trustees held at the school in Saxtons River, Vt. Don was a member of the Class of 1941 at the Academy. Residing in Hanover, he is now General Manager of Okemo Mountain Ski Development in Ludlow, Vt. There he maintains an active interest in the sport he once participated in while in prep school and college. Earlier Don was director of winter sports and the U. S. Army recreation program at Garmisch, Germany.
BOXING THE COMPASS: Evan Connell has just published a new book, "The Patriot," Viking Press, a story about a young cadet in the Navy Flying Corps. The New York Times book reviewer is quite complimentary to Evan and his latest effort. Read it and judge for yourselves. Directors of the Torrington Company, Hartford, Conn., have announced the appointment of ChanningHarwood to the position of Assistant Secretary. Chan has a law degree from Connecticut Law School and is a member of the Connecticut bar. The winter cold and dampness will not bother Dick Momsen. He has the climatological pleasure to serve as an Assistant Professor at Rollins College, Winter Park, Fla. Austin Wason, President of Wason-Mac-Donald Company, Haverhill, Mass., is heading that city's 1961 Community Chest Campaign. Austin, wife, and five sons live in nearby Atkinson, N. H. He has served on the Atkinson School Board for six years, five of them as Chairman. He was also president of the Haverhill Chamber of Commerce from 1953-57.
That's finis for this month. A very Merry Christmas and a likewise New Year.
