This reporter, getting off to a slow start this fall in keeping the ALUMNI MAGAZINE abreast of the latest doings in Cleveland, has a bit of catching up to do. Going back several weeks to Saturday evening, September 23, we find ourselves in the midst of one of the Club's gayest and most successful events of this and every year - the annual Tea Dance. This year's dance, under the able direction of Ted Mortimer '44 and his very energetic committee, attracted approximately 350 local Dartmouth alumni and their friends. Held outdoors on a beautiful, warm fall evening at the Chagrin Valley Hunt Club in Gates Mills, the dance was a huge success in all respects, not the least of which was the contribution of the proceeds to the Club Scholarship Fund. Our thanks to Ted, his committee, and everyone else who enjoyed themselves that night.
On Friday, October 6, yours truly journeyed to Hanover for the annual Club Officers' meeting. Since this was a non-football weekend at the college, a special program of meetings and tours was arranged, and we had plenty of time to look over the many changes that had come to Dartmouth since our last visit. Two things impressed me the most that weekend. The first was the fact that the class of '52 had the largest contingent at the meeting which no doubt contributed heavily to its overall success (certainly to my enjoyment). The second thing that impressed and amazed me was the tour of the Hopkins Center. I, like every other Dartmouth alumnus, had read and heard about this cultural and social Center that was being erected at the College. I certainly cannot give you all of my impressions of what I saw that Friday afternoon as Warner Bentley led us through this gigantic structure. Let it suffice to say that you cannot possibly understand or imagine what is being built at our alma mater until you actually see it, and when you see you can't believe it. It was easy to understand, however, Mr. Bentley's enthusiasm as he told us of the many programs and guest artists that are being scheduled for the Center in the years to come. I know that everyone who took that tour with me is anxiously awaiting the return trip next fall to see the finished product.
Henry Helgen, Assistant Dean of the College, was in Cleveland this week. One of the reasons for his visit was to present to Shaker Heights High School an award denoting the high scholastic average during their freshman year at Dartmouth, of the seven boys from Shaker in the class of 1964. The entire student body of the High School gathered in a special assembly on Wednesday morning, November 1, to hear Dean Helgen make the presentation to Principal Rupp. Accompanying the Dean were Dartmouth Club president William Ziegler '50 and past-president Warren Crumbine '37. Congratulations to these boys and to Shaker Heights High School!
It's hard to believe that Christmas is just around the corner, but such is the case. So, along with your other holiday arrangements, plan to join your friends at the club's Christmas Luncheon at the Sheraton Cleveland Hotel on Wednesday, December 20. See you there.
