John Turkevich was the guest speaker at the Dartmouth Club of Philadelphia annual luncheon for undergrads, their dads, and alumni on December 29. He spoke on "Impressions of the Soviet Union." Last summer John was the Scientific Attache to the U. S. Embassy in Moscow. He is a Princeton professor and recently published "Russian for the Scientist" written in collaboration with his wife who is also a member of the Princeton faculty, teaching Russian. Ludmilla attended the luncheon and participated in the discussion.

George and Suzanne Pasfield's daughter, Hope, was married December 17 to Henry McConnell Ingram '61, son of Jim and Jane Ingram '29 of "Beaver Falls, Penna. The wedding was performed in the Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church.

Jack and Margaret Zellers announced on December 18 the engagement of their daughter, Margaret, to Gordon Kent Lend '56, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas A. Lenci Jr., of Summit, N. J,, and Falmouth. Mass. Margaret is a graduate of Connecticut College. She is a member of the Junior League of New York, where she is manager of the Virgin Islands Government Tourist Office. Her fiance, who teaches at Suffield Academy, graduated from Pingry School and Dartmouth.

Charlie Coe, public relations expert, is now a partner in Business Development Associates, 660 Fifth Ave., New York.

Dana Condon has moved his United Fruit Company office to a new location in Guatemala City. Political "unrest" caused Verna and him an anxious three days last fall but they came through with no particular disasters.

Art Gow's summer home in Guilford on the Connecticut shore burned down December 15, the papers said the $30,000 loss was fully insured. Faulty wiring is thought to have been the cause - Art had just had some new wiring put in and the place winterized.

Dick Sullivan's picture appeared in the Boston papers December 14 when he was elected chairman of the State Board of Library Commissioners, succeeding Charming L. Bete '29. The board directs the Division of Library Extension of the Mass. Department of Education and rules on state aid for public libraries. Dick, director of libraries at Suffolk University, has been a commissioner since 1942.

After taking our daughter back to the Madeira School near Washington on January 3 I started calling up '28ers, and managed to connect with three. Dick Rendell, news analyst for the Mutual Broadcasting System, said he gave a lecture at Oberlin College recently, and was pleased that the students kept him going until after midnight. He is now doing a 15-minute news commentary at 8 A.M. on a coast-to-coast hook-up. I can't divulge all the inside information Dick gave me but I can say that he has responded to the letter he received from John Cronin and John Phillips. Incidentally, Dick is the fifth member of his family to go to Dartmouth.

Vic Hartjens, electrical appliance wholesaler in Washington, said he and Mary had not gone to Europe last spring as planned due to delays in remodeling their house in Bethesda. Their last trip abroad was in 1955 and they are looking forward to going again soon.

Charlie Gearhart, manager of New York Life Insurance Company's Washington office, said he and Henrietta were 'going to Miami Beach for a company meeting this month, and hoped to stop off at Hobe Sound.

Assistant Secretary of State Lane Dwinell and Betty had a six-weeks' trip around the world last fall, visiting seventeen of our embassies, principally in the Far East and South Asia. They ran into a number of Dartmouth people, but the only '28er was Tax Connell, whom they met by chance in the Tokyo airport just as they were leaving for Hong Kong and he was embarking for Taipei. Tax is assistant director of the China Medical Board of New York.

From Hong Kong, the Dwinell's journey took them to Manila, Saigon, Phnom Penh, Bangkok, Rangoon, New Delhi, Karachi, Tehran, Ankara, Rome, and Paris. They had the unusual experience of mailing their absentee ballots from Bangkok and receiving the election returns in Rome. One of the highlights, Lane said, was a side trip to Katmandu, the capital of Nepal, where we recently established a new Embassy.
