'Tis true but hard to believe that the winter is more than half over. And although there's magic in the swish of skis and the hum of skates, the snow and ice season does have its problems, especially to the snowsuit set. Regardless of Mr. Groundhog's shadow, spring is on the way, I know! I've been thinking in terms of rose bushes (are they dead), grass, buds on trees, backswings, warm, sunny days, slush, sand traps, robins, birdies of all sorts, even eagles, soft showers, replacing divots, and all the things that go with spring. Won't be long now. And have you thought about your income tax? Ah, spring.

Of interest to you Westchester and Connecticut shore commuters to The City is this item. Bill Alpert, son of George Alpert, board chairman and the President of the New Haven Railroad, has been appointed "Coordinator" for the road! Bill, an attorney, will direct the railroad's program to increase freight revenues and improve passenger service. He has been close to the line's situation since his father became president in 1956 and is believed to be one of the authors of the program to cure deficits through tax relief, subsidies, and higher fares. Bill graduated from Boston University Law School, served as a pilot in World War II, and is a former assistant attorney-general in New York State. I can remember Bill's talents at the hurdles well; think he may still hold some Dartmouth cage records.

BOXING THE COMPASS: Art Nichols has been named an assistant superintendent in the electronic systems division of the American Insurance Group's head office data processing department in Newark, N. J. For the last ten years, Art has been with the Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company where he was engaged in electronic systems and procedures duties. Art also served as a representative for Massachusetts Mutual to Guide, IBM's organization for users of electronic computers. Good luck in New Jersey, Art. Gordy Brown (this must be the first time Gordy has appeared in this column for some time) serves as Divisional Manager for Waddell and Reed, Denver, Colo., and lives in Golden. John MacDonald is Factory Operations Manager for the F. S. Webster Company of Cambridge, Mass. Fairly newly-wed John lives in Marblehead. I have wondered for some time where Johnny Miller was and now all is revealed; all of his whereabouts, that is. He's with Campbell Soup Company and lives at 521 Oriole Lane (must be bird's nest soup), Villanova, Penna. John's middle name is Campbell and I'll ..bet a chicken noodle if there isn't some connection. If you're looking for Rube Miller you'll find him as a partner of the firm Miller, Kahn and Nachshin, 116 John St., N. Y. And if you're planning a trip to Pompano Beach, Fla., drop in at the Silver Thatch Inn for a chat with "Ace" Newdick, Assistant to the manager. Jerry Farrell was running for election to the Springfield, Mass., Ward five school committee last November. How'd you make out, Jerry?

C'est tout pour maintenant. Au revoir.
