The following is a letter quoted practicallyin its entirety, from Roland Beers:

Last July I left my post as Director of Research of Robert W. Johnson Lab. at the Children's Hospital in Baltimore and took up new duties at Johns Hopkins University in the School of Hygiene and Public Health as Associate Professor of Radiological Sciences, head of an as-yet-to-be-established Division of Radiobiology in the Department of Radiological Sciences. I also have an appointment as Instructor of Orthopedic Surgery . . . and have pending an appointment as Associate Professor of Physiological Chemistry . . both (jobs) in the School of Medicine.

My other professional activity is as a consultant for Miles Laboratories, Inc., and its several divisions in the fields of industrial enzymology, clinical enzymology, and related areas.

A book jointly authored by Dr. R. F. Steiner and myself and published by the Elsevier Publishing Co. will appear this spring. Its title is Polynucleotides, Natural and Synthetic Nucleic Acids. We don't expect it to be a best seller, but hope it will prove useful ... in a rapidly growing field of science. I recently submitted my 34th scientific paper to a scientific Journal.

This year I received a $52,000 research grant from the U. S. Public Health Service for the calendar year 1961, to be renewed annually; a $5000 grant from the American Cancer Society; a $6,900 grant from Miles Laboratories, Inc.; and have pending a $33,000 research contract with the Division of Radiological Health, which should be activated by March 1. Johns Hopkins ... is actively engaged in a large building program. One of the buildings will be used by the Department of Radiological Sciences; consequently, I am engaged in the task of architectural problems, laboratory design, etc.

What else do I do? Well, I am an abstractor from Chemical Abstracts. I have become an active member of the Baltimore Rotary Club and its Youth Service activities. I am also an Assistant Scout Master for Troop 35 which is acquiring a national reputation because of the leadership of its Scoutmaster, Dr. Carl A. Zappfe, a metallurgist by profession.

But the really important news is probably the growing Dartmouth family. James Wheelock Beers has his eye on Dartmouth . . . and at present is attending Gilman School as a freshman. With a name like that his course is fairly well set. Another potential candidate... is Jim's younger brother, William, and way off in the distance is John, class of 1976. All these boys have some of Eleazar's genes as does their old man.

Last fall Helen and I attended the Convocation of Great Issues of Conscience in Modern Medicine and found the event very interesting and provocative. Our best man, Dave Kirkpatrick and his charming wife were also there as was Peter Beck and his wife. With best regards.

Roland, again many thanks for this informative, vitally interesting, and challenging letter. You are indeed a busy man and sound delightfully happy at your work.

BOXING THE COMPASS: Although I have not heard anything direct from the elephant's mouth, it looks very much as though our aspiring Congressman, Jim Knowies, didn't quite catch the Washington train from West Virginia. I remember carefully scrutinizing the papers at the time of last fall's elections and noting that West Va. seemed to have been Kennedyized; better luck next time, Jim. Nevertheless, Attorney Knowies is still "on the circuit" as an article from the "Clarksburg - reports. Jim spoke to the Clarksburg Association of Life Underwriters on "i960 Census Trends." Also on the political trail (of sorts), but on a much more local level, is George Barr, who has announced his candidacy for town moderator for the town of Walpole, Mass. George serves as senior member of the Appropriations Committee. Currently vice-president of ANco Technical Writing Service, Inc., of Boston, George has been general manager and a director of the J. S. Cushing Co., Norwood Press; sales executive at the Plimpton Press; and assistant to the president of Anderson-Nichols Co., consulting engineers. The First National Bank of Boston announces the election of Richard W. Brown as a vice president. Dick is also a vice president of The First Small Business Investment Corporation of New England. Appointed vice president of Marketing of the Carondelet Foundry Co., St. Louis, is Al Gruer. And William J. Doyle Jr. has been appointed Manager of Personnel and Community Relations by Metal Hydrides Incorporated.

I'm afraid that that's all there is for this month. C'est fini.
