By the time you read this column our good friend "McBee" will have enjoyed the sights and pleasures of Europe for more than a month. He has asked me to take over during his six-month absence which I look forward to doing. I've asked him to keep me posted on his activities so that I can pass on anything of interest to the rest of you. Being the progressive class that we are, it seems only natural that we have our own foreign correspondent.
To facilitate matters please send your letters and clippings directly to me and be sure to send them as often as you can. If I don't hear from you, I might find it difficult to fill this space each month.
Before getting on to the marital scene I should like to report first that Ned Brown and his wife Sonja have left for New Zealand where Ned has a fellowship for study in geology. He is going to be at Otago University, Dunedin, New Zealand. I had to get the world atlas out for that one. Although I haven't heard any official word, I assume Alex McGinnis has left for New Zealand too, where he will study botany and zoology. Here's hoping the three of them can get together to raise a glass or two for dear old Dartmouth.
Tom Green has "scooped" me in the Newsletter in several areas of interest for the class. Since most of you have read it, I'll refrain from rehashing what he said. I have received, however, recent notices of forthcoming marriages. One announcement made some time ago which has escaped this column is that for Marty Bud who plans to be married in June to Anna Machtinger. Marty will have to return briefly from England to take his bride as he has a two-year scholarship to Oxford University. Austin Mittler is selling his stock in Bachelorhood, Inc. as he plans to marry Carole Margulies. Other announcements have been made of the engagements of Steve Moody and Maria Dee Hildreth, BobCary and Jean Raye, John Litchfield and Sue Woodworth, Al Shaver and Ellen Martz, SethMoger and Barbara Glenn.
Rusty Ingersoll put his skates away after the hockey season last year, but he may have to get them out again to keep up with his new bride, Pat Podas, an accomplished figure skater. Pat and Rusty were married on December 21 and several '60's were on hand. Tom Wahman, Mike Hollern, and TomMcBurney were ushers. Rusty has been working in Bend, Ore., for Weyerhaeuser Timber Company and took just enough time to come back to Minneapolis for the wedding and take Pat back to the west coast.
The critical eye of Wayne Givens has come to light again. The Sports Illustrated publisher in the Dec. 12 issue referred to a letter Wayne sent in a year ago in protest to an article "Up Squash! Down Baseball!" by Stephen Birmingham. Bruce Hasenkamp, who brought this whole thing to my attention, thinks Mr. Birmingham was the author of the article appearing in Holiday about a year ago comparing Dartmouth and Gettysburg fraternities. Judging from Mr. Birmingham's insight on Dartmouth fraternities, I feel Wayne might well have had a legitimate complaint.
Brian Brigham has entered pre-flight training at the Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Fla., where Jay Sigmund finished sixteen weeks of training in October.
I saw Walt and Sara Lee Freedman, JimAdler, and Jim Houser in Cleveland over the holidays. Jim Houser didn't come through with his Christmas party this year. He claimed he is saving up for Mardi Gras for which he plans to take time out from his med. studies at Tulane to celebrate. If anyone gets the urge to merge with the surge, he says he would be glad to see some Dartmouth men down there.
I'm going to stop now before I send the whole class down on top of him. I'll be talking to you next month.
