The Annual Meeting of The Dartmouth Alumni Association of Boston was held at the Hotel Statler Hilton on Thurday, February 23, 1961. There were 318 alumni in attendance. With some trepidation, it was decided to exclude ladies, reverting to the format of the meeting for years prior to 1959. No major reverberations occurred.
President Jack Benson '31 presided and reported on the activities carried on by the Association during the year, which included the sponsorship of Dartmouth Night at Pops, an Open House for Prospective Freshmen, cooperation with the Bill Cunningham Memorial Scholarship Committee, which has to date provided the College approximately $23,500 in scholarship fund capital, and cooperation with the New England Council in the planning of an educational conference held in Boston in November, i960.
While the attendance was somewhat disappointing, in view of the program, all present seemed to have an extremely enjoyable time. The features of the occasion were a performance by the Dartmouth Glee Club in full strength, talks by Al Rozycki '61 and by President Dickey. After the formal disbanding of the meeting, the Injunaires sang.
Officers nominated for the ensuing year are as follows: Wilbur W. Bullen '22, president, John B. Kenerson '28, Richard D. Hill '41, and Lester Godwin '30, vice presidents, Richard D. Leggat '48, secretary, John W.Williamson '42, assistant secretary, and JohnS. Sullivan '36, treasurer. Members at largeare: William J. Breed, Jr., '52, John G. Clayton '51, Ralph Fifield '46, and Philip H. SeeJr. '50.
In addition to the foregoing, the Presidents of constituent local clubs in the Boston area, together with one further member designated by the club, and all National Enrollment Chairmen in the Association's area serve ex officio on the Executive Committee of the Association.
Future operations of the association include the annual open house for prospective freshmen held at the University Club in Boston each year. At this meeting, to which all applicants who have been accepted for the next freshman class are invited, an official of the College and an undergraduate speak and a pertinent film of the College is shown. Members of the executive committee of the association and all enrollment and interviewing personnel in the area act as hosts. Just how effective this meeting is in "clinching" successful applicants has never been determined, but it is hoped that the enthusiasm and interest of the alumni and the College speakers rub off on the wavering candidate. Indications from prior years encourage continuation of the program. The 1961 open house will be held Sunday, May 14.
The annual Dartmouth Night at the Pops will be May 18 this year. All interested should be sure to send in their reservations as soon as the brochures are mailed.
