The news is, this month, to say the least, appallingly scant; and the only conclusion one can come to is that the class of 1947 has become so set in their ways that they never add to their families, change jobs, or even beat their wives. This is hard to believe, that old age could set in so quickly. Even though your modesty may dictate a non-tooting of the personal horn, out of the thoughtfulness for friends it would be nice to let them know where you are and what you are doing.
"Oceanography of the Arctic" was the title of a lecture given by Larry Coachman in the Filene Auditorium in October. Larry's lecture was sponsored by the Department of Geography and the Stefansson Collection and, according to all reports, was quite a success. The Ph.D. which causes us to refer to Larry as Dr. Coachman was earned at the University of Washington where Larry is a member of the faculty. He obtained his Master of Forestry degree at Yale and was part of the Blue Dolphin Labrador program from 1950-1955 making expeditions in four summers and three winters.
Being principally concerned with the field of oceanography he also served as second mate aboard the Blue Dolphin illustrating his versatility. Larry studied gas inclusions (no, that is a Ph.D. not an M.D.) in glacier ice at the University of Oslo and was also m the Arctic Institute Greenland Expedition of 1958. Larry is considered by his peers to be one of the best-informed men in the western world on the Arctic Ocean and recently submitted a paper, "Water Masses of the Arctic Ocean," at the International Arctic Ocean Symposium in Hershey, Pa.
George Houze who left the insurance business to go after a medical degree in Canada, now lives with his family at 334 Meadow crest Road, Kingston, Ontario, and would certainly love to hear from old friends, as we would like to hear from him.
Lou Frank, who has lived with his wife, Honey, and their two children in Pound Ridge, N.Y., has just received an appointment as Associate Eastern Sales Manager for Armco Steel and has moved his family, bag and baggage, to 2105 Linden Avenue, Middletown, Ohio. Lou, too, would like to hear from anyone in the neighborhood out there. Being new in the area he would like to see some familiar faces.
Catherine Jean Matteson finally succumbed to the pleas and has agreed to marry John Childs who at this moment is living at 2566 Elm Street, Manchester, N.H. Catherine went to Colby Junior College and then graduated from the University of Colorado. After that she spent a year in Honolulu and returned home early this summer. Took John only a couple of months to get her to say "yes." John is in the winter sporting goods business and runs a ski shop in Manchester.
Norm Fink, our excellent reunion chairman, has just let us know that he has moved to 51 Whittington Road, White Plains, N.Y., where he and Helen and young Hayden have sacrificed the joys of New York City for the pleasures of the country. Norm, a partner with the Kramer and Lans law firm, is very active in enrollment committee work for the college and is also Master of Publicity Lodge #1000 F & AM this year, informs us that Doug Burch is also very interested in becoming a member of this fra- ternity.
As we began, so shall we end, with the plea that this is all the news and we would like lots more. Let's hear from you.
