Compiling and writing this column is such a great joy that a three months' summer hiatus leaves one breathless in an attempt to report all of the many things that have happened during that time.
First of all the passing of John Ianiri came as a distinct shock not only because he was a great guy, but because a brilliant career was nipped in the bud. It was not easy to write the obit of one's own roommate. Our deepest sympathies go out to Eleanor and the five children.
Bill Knight, who was awarded his CPCU designation in 1959, recently assumed the new position of vice president of the Lumber Mutual Fire Insurance Co. of Boston. The announcement was made at the 69th annual policyholders' meeting. He joined the firm in 1951, served as special agent in New England, New York, and the South, and in 1962 was appointed agency supervisor. Bill was instrumental in establishing the New England 1752 Club's annual educational clinics and is past vice president of that organization.
Received a delightful letter from KenKelly who has just returned from England after living there for nearly ten years where he was employed as an engineer for a U.S. firm engaged in helping our country develop military facilities in England and Scotland. On returning to this country Ken and his wife Gloria, Ricky — 12, Cameron — 11, Colby - 9 settled in Tarrytown, N.Y., where he worked on the completion of design of the mammoth moon rocket launching facility project now under way at Cape Kennedy. The building is the largest (in volume) in the world. What with the technical innovations involved and the role it will play in our voyage to the moon, it can be seen that Ken's job was pretty exciting. With this project now completed. Ken has joined I.B.M. as a project manager in the New York headquarters.
The last paragraph of Ken's letter expresses the viewpoint of a lot of us: "As the years roll on and my ability to evaluate the experiences of my life increases I begin to realize more and more the value and also the pleasure of the years spent at Dartmouth. My respect and admiration for our school and all its traditions and principles continue to grow. I am sure this feeling must be shared by all of its old grads."
In the last issue of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE we mentioned Bernie O'Shea's promotion to assistant sales director of the William Carter Co., adding that Jim Concession is now advertising manager in Boston - two 47's working in the same company. "Beep" writes that we had really dropped the ball in that Austin Callaway was inadvertently left out of the notice. Gus is the merchandising manager of the Special Projects Division based at Needham Heights in Massachusetts, so now there is a trio helping to move Carter's toward its 100th year in 1965.
Julie Sayer came across a notice in his local paper of Dave Squire which the "Bear" was kind enough to send in announcing that Dave was appointed Stamford chairman of the Connecticut campaign for the John Fitzgerald Kennedy Memorial Library. Dave is very active in Stamford affairs, being among other things, past president and a trustee of Temple Sinai and of the Stamford Good Government Association. All this while being the very successful president of Ansonia Mills.

And to finish it off for now, Barry Marks has returned to Brown as an Assistant Professor of English after serving a year as a Fulbright lecturer at the University of Lille. Barry explained that his students were the equivalent of college seniors who had achieved a knowledge of the English language by teaching in secondary schools in that country for a year. His role of instructor extended far beyond the university walls when for a two and a half week period he visited French West Africa under the sponsorship of the U.S. State Dept.
A trip that was originally scheduled to take him only to lecture halls in the area's cultural centers was expanded, the professor said, to include many speaking engagements, one of which was at the home of the American Ambassador. Never one to rest after he leaves a lecture hall, Barry has published several books. His most recent book on the well-known American poet and painter E.E. Cummings was published this past February.
A resident of Barrington since assuming his duties at Brown in 1955, Dr. Marks has been active in the Barrington Congregational Church and the Barrington Junior Chamber of Commerce in 1960. He is a former chairman of the R.I. Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. Mrs. Marks and son Stephen and daughter Dana accompanied Barry to France and made their home in Lille.
Still more news to flow next month, but keep the letters coming.
