Vacation time is over. It is good to see football ticket applications in the mail. Make plans now to see a few games. Then arrange pre or post game gatherings. Picnics and cocktail parties with old friends are always fun. You usually make a few new friends too, and that's progress.
From Hartford, Conn., comes word that Pete McGrath has been promoted to agency comptroller at the Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Co. Pete started his work with Connecticut Mutual in 1946 in the actuarial department. Three years later he transferred to the agency department and was named an agency assistant in 1952. Pete has been an assistant agency comptroller since 1959, at which time he was also appointed to the company's official staff. The McGraths are living in West Hartford.
News always pours in during the summer months. So let's see what we have. Lt.Comdr. Bruce Bryer is attached to the Navy Section, Military Advisory Group, APO San Francisco. Bruce returned to the Navy in 1952, later attended Scripps Institution of Oceanography in 1954-55. Ken Coyne continues his teaching career at the Emerson Junior High School in Los Angeles. Lt.Comdr. Edwin Burke is attending the U. S. Naval War College in Newport, R. I. Since leaving Dartmouth, he has attended Harvard and in 1953 attended the U. S. Naval Postgraduate School, doing engineering work, in Monterey, Calif.
Paul Blake has relocated his living quarters in Buffalo, N. Y., after a disastrous spring fire which demolished his apartment and all of his personal belongings. Paul is the regional representative for the Portland Cement Association in western New York State. Lt. Comdr. John "Schaef" Schaeffer continues his Navy career as a chaplain, FPO New York.
Tyler Welch is a broker with Brown, Harris, Stevens, Inc., N.Y.C. Lt. Manny Benero is stationed at the U. S. Naval Base, Norfolk, Va. Francis Connelly is a construction engineer in Madlen, N. Y. Edwin Wood is a mining geologist in Salt Lake City.
John Lee is Product Manager with Thomas J. Lipton, Inc., Hoboken, N. J. After graduating from Dartmouth in 1947, John did sales work with Procter & Gamble Distributing Co. until 1951 when he returned to the Marine Corps for a year. He then attended the Harvard Business School and received his M.B.A. degree in 1954, later was associated with Compton Advertising Inc. in New York City, and with Maxwell House Coffee in the marketing field. John was married to the former Carol Raymond in April 1955 in Scarsdale, N. Y. RichardDeNatale has become Manager of Graphic Design with The Carborundum Co. in Niagara Falls, N. Y. Previously, he was associated with The Reynolds Metal Co. in the same capacity.
This past March, Bill Childs directed a musical presentation, "Requiem," by Gabriel Faure, by the Senior choir of First Congregational church in Stoughton, Mass. Bill is organist and choirmaster of the church. After graduating from Dartmouth, he spent three years in post graduate study at New England Conservatory of Music. Before coming to Stoughton, he directed choirs and secular choruses in Quincy, Belmont, Boston, and Weymouth, Mass. He is music director of Brockton Chapter SPEBSQSA. These are sparetime activities. Bill is an industrial engineer with Joseph Pollak Corp. in Dorchester, Mass.
Len Hall will be teaching science at the fifth and sixth grade level in Weare, N. H. He has been in business in the Manchester area for the past fourteen years. Len and wife Lucy have four young children. PeteTownsend, formerly section head in the chemical engineering division of Air Reduction Company's Central Research Laboratories, was recently named Assistant di- rector chemical engineering. He has been with the company since 1953. Pete received the Ph.D. degree in chemical engineering from Columbia University.
Sam Tassel was married in June to the former Ruth Berkett. The Tassels planned a honeymoon trip to Jamaica, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.. Following their return, they will live in Marblehead, Mass.
Bill Bailey was promoted in June to assistant vice-president Liability Underwriting Department of the Aetna Casualty & Surety Co. Bill received his M.B.A. degree from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania in 1949. Formerly with the National Bureau of Casualty Underwriters, he joined Aetna in 1954 as assistant secretary and was promoted to secretary four years later.
The noteworthy news has been passed along to us that Bob Nelson has been appointed research manager for meteorological balloons at the Dewey and Almy Division of the W. R. Grace Co. Bob joined the Cambridge, Mass., firm in 1953 and in 1958 was appointed group leader in the meteorological balloon research laboratory. We're told that Bob also leads a busy community life, being active in scouting and church affairs. He and Irene now have three little Nelsons, Linda, 10, Robert, 8, and Charles, 1.
Dr. Shelley Segal was married to the former Harriet Ellen Feinberg in New York City in May. Bob Shifman was best man at the ceremony. Mrs. Segal is a graduate of Wellesley College and is on the staff of Show Magazine. Shelley holds M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in embryology and biochemistry from the State University of lowa. He has also studied at the University of Geneva, Switzerland. He is now assistant medical director of Population Council, Rockefeller Institute, and a lecturer in endocrinology at Columbia University.
Herb Smith is living in Morristown, N. J., where he is associated with the Butler Co. Newsletter Editor Hugh Chapin was chairman of the Insurance Brokers Association of Massachusetts meetings in Boston this spring. He is also a vice president of the association. Your Secretary enjoyed a very pleasant August evening with Bob andCaroline Hall in Omaha, Neb. The Halls have enjoyed the Omaha area for over six years and have three fine sons, although middle-son Jeff is newly sick. Bob represents the du Pont company in this area in the sale and distribution of their antifreeze materials. I have become more of a traveling man during the past few months in a new association as Project Manager with Armour Chemical Industries Division of Armour and Co., Chicago.
