Our big 6oth draws closer and the response has been good. Those who say they plan to come now number 6o-some. Some of the details are gelling. English professor Don Pease will present a talk on Robert Frost and religion professor emeritus Fred Berthold will lead our memorial service.

The holiday version of Punchy Thomas' luncheons at the Norwich Inn has happened with nine '49ers and spouses catching up on recent events and Christmas plans. News passed on included Bob Alden's improvement after a stroke. He'll make it next June. Also the status of the Dartmouth skating club, one of our pet activities of support, seems to have stabilized after a few months of question.

While many stay the lifelong quest for a reduced golf handicap, a pair of 49ers maintain a pace more akin to 40 years ago. The much-journeyed Quent Kopp, chairman of the California High-Speed Rail Authority, was in Washington, D.C., in December to accept the Champion of Infrastructure Award at the second annual Global Infrastructure Leadership Forum. Featuring the worlds most significant infrastructure leaders, the forum focuses on creating opportunities in the global infrastructure marketplace by assisting to increase competitiveness. While in D.C. Quent lunched with Ray Rasenberger, the owner of one of the world's widest grins. Ray still mediates court cases and also chairs the board of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, D.C. chapter. The Osher Foundation, whose motto is "Curiosity never retires," recently announced a $1 million gift for the institute at American University in recognition of its excellence and longevity. During the above events Ray and Quent lunched together. They look forward to our 60th reunion.

Our class ranks are diminished by the deaths of James Roswell Rooney II, D.V.M.; Eugene Everett Masson; Charles Kilham Dodge; Howard Deighton Wellman Jr.; John Kent Cooley; and Herbert Frederick Granstoroff.
