Dartmouth's ski fortunes took a nose dive during Winter Carnival when a strong Middlebury team defeated the Indians by 6.4 points. The Panthers proved their superiority by dominating the Alpine events.
Middlebury swept the top three places in both the downhill and slalom and opened a lead which was too much for the Indians to overcome even with a team victory in the jumping. The Panthers held only a 1.4 lead, though, after the downhill as a result of the close finish of the top four skiers. The leading Indian skier was Skip Bryan who tied for fourth. Others in the top ten included Dartmouth's jim lacobson, sixth, and Brian Beattie, eighth.
Dartmouth took the lead in the team competition after the cross country in which Ed Williams was first with a time of 1:06:17. This was three minutes faster than the second-place finish of Dennis Donahue of Middlebury. Dick Durrance was third in the event and Sel Hannah was fifth.
Middlebury all but wrapped up the meet with its showing in the slalom. Skip Bryan and Pat Terenzini were sixth and seventh, the best the Indians could do. In the overall Alpine standings, Bryan was fifth, Terenzini, eighth, and Durrance, eighteenth. Middlebury, of course, had the first three places.
In the jumping, Brian Beattie was second behind Swallow of Middlebury. Hannah was third. The Green picked up some points in the combined Nordic event, but not enough to close the gap.
For the second year in a row Dartmouth's Dick Durrance, a junior, was named Skimeister.
The following week at St. Lawrence the Indians took top honors, but Middle- bury was not among the top competitors. Still ahead, however, is the Middlebury Winter Carnival and the Eastern Championships at Williams College. The Indian will be defending champion in both of these meets. They must qualify in the Easterns, of course, in order to compete in the NCAA Championships scheduled for Hanover in March.
