The freshman basketball team has posted one of the best records of the winter season, 4-1. Its biggest victory came against a previously unbeaten Holy Cross freshman five, 73-68. Other wins include Norwich, 86-42; Vermont, 63-51; and Norwich, 76-53. Harvard handed the '65s their only setback, 72-59. Pete Coker, Davis Blaine, and Mike Buckley have led the Pea Green attack.
Ab Oakes' undermanned freshman hockey team has suffered four straight losses, thus giving the sextet a record to date of 2-4. Yale outskated the '65s, 8-2, as did KUA, 5-3, and Harvard nipped the frosh, 2-1, in overtime at Cambridge. Before Christmas the little Greens had beaten Bishops and Norwich, while losing to the Silver Skates Club. Chuck Zeh, the team's newly elected captain, is still a standout on defense. Goalie Terrance Guiney also made a respectable showing in the Harvard game.
To date the freshman swimming team has matched the varsity with a 1-1 record. It defeated Brown, 64-31, and was defeated by Harvard, 65-38. Against Brown the '65s swept nine of the eleven events. Tim McLaughlin was a double winner in the 200- and 400-yard freestyle events. Other winners included Philo Willetts in the 100-yard freestyle, Forrest Martin in the dive, Chris Fischer in the 50-yard freestyle, and Ed Swanson in the 100-yard backstroke. In spite of their fine showing against the Bruins, the freshmen are not expected to have the depth of last year's undefeated freshman team.
The freshman track team also stands 1-1 after two meets. Following a lopsided victory over Boston University, the '65 runners dropped a 60 1/3-42 1/3 decision to Cornell.
Thus far the freshman squash team has yet to score a point. The team was beaten first by Harvard 9-0 and then by Deerfield 5-0.
Basketball captain Bill Shanahan (30) tries in vain to block a shot by HolyCross guard Joe Kelly. The Crusaders went on to defeat the Indians, 80-48.
