There's no question but that this is the shortest month of the year, but for the life of me I can't explain why, year in and year out, this is consistently my shortest column of the year. But here I am with the empty abyss of my news file yawning vacantly at me. Perhaps it's fraternal hibernation, for you people don't seem to do nothin' during the winter months; at least, nothing that I hear about. So much for the lament of a temporarily frustrated secretary. There is news, and here it comes.

Turn to the notes of 1917 for a very interesting item concerning Vic Smith. You New Yorkers should soon have an opportunity to enjoy Vic's handiwork. As for the young man himself, I imagine he's pleased to be in New York. Always active in class affairs, this will give Vic a chance to commune with the Big Green Manhattan moguls.

BOXING THE COMPASS: Roger Brown still is operating his highly successful Food Service Corporation in Syracuse. BillSchwartzbaugh is assistant dean of men at Amherst after doing graduate work at Yale Divinity School, getting his Ph.D. at Ohio State, and serving as Dean of Students at the University of Pittsburgh. Without a doubt Bill is a busy man, for assistant deans have a reputation for becoming involved in some of the most outlandish situations. Bob Cate, who suddenly and successfully picked up his suburban stakes several years ago and went to work for the United Nations, spent a weekend this last fall with his parents in Branford, Conn. Bob, as you may remember, heads up a U.N. team in British Guiana engaged in soil development projects aimed at greatly increasing the production of food by the Guianese. Bob's last note to me regarding this exploit also mentioned that his Georgetown, B. G., apartment was right over that of the highly controversial Cheddi Jagan who at the present time seems to be in a good deal of hot water with the British Government for his communist associations. Bob's job sounds like an extremely interesting one for many reasons.

A realignment of sales and marketing responsibilities within the International Paper Company has resulted in a major promotion for Russ Chase. Russ has been chosen as sales manager for the newly formed paper division for primary grades. Russ first joined International Paper in 1947 as a sales apprentice following his graduation from Tuck School. After several years of direct sales work, he was named a regional sales manager for New York in 1956. He has served since 1959 as manager of publication sales.

Congratulations to Prof, and Mrs. Fred Berthold on the birth of a daughter, Sarah Megan, last November at Mary Hitchcock Hospital in Hanover. Frank Aldrich is presently Sub-Manager of the Sao Paulo Branch of the First National Bank of Boston in Brazil. If you are in Toronto, Canada, look up Larry Bellows, advertising account executive with Baker Advertising Limited. Larry lives in nearby Oakville. Blair McClenachan is Sales Manager in Electronics Design for the Hayden Publishing Co. in New York, living at 177 Meadowbrook Drive, Princeton, N. J.

I wish there was more to tell you for I find these brief items about classmates most interesting and not a little nostalgic. And I also feel, as do most of you, that it is vital not to let old Dartmouth friendships erode away. And do not forget that Treasurer Barney Oldfield expects your cooperation and contribution in his class dues drive.

William Welch, John Berry, and William Craig (I to r) have much in common. Allthree are with J. M. Berry & Co. and live in Dayton, Ohio. All three are membersof the Class of 1944, and will be heading the 20th Reunion planning as co-chairmen.

Secretary, Middlesex School Concord, Mass.
