Of interest to Dartmouth men in general is the work being done by Charlie English. A graduate of the University of Michigan Law School and a practicing attorney0 in Urbana, Ohio, Charlie's avocation is conservation. Although this may sound like a tongue-twister, Charlie has been and is deeply involved in "conservation easement a legal arrangement that may be made with a landowner for protecting the landscape without detracting from the present use or value of his property." Under this arrangement 'the owner may continue to use his land as before, but the land must remain as open space for the benefit of present and future generations." I find this all very exciting, for here in Concord, Mass., Harvard University and other interested groups have for some time been active in setting aside land for the benefit of posterity. And in this age of ex-urban and megalopolitan living, the need is only too obvious.

As scheduled, your Executive Committee met last April in Boston, and as far as this column is specifically concerned, there was little of great import to report. However, Gene Wilkin will inform you via the newsletter as to matters mundane and pertinent to class affairs. Among those present were: Stan Newton, SEC., Barney Oldfield, Eliot Mover Joe Michael, Gene Wilkin, Steve Hull, Johnny" Brooks, Steve D'Arrigo, Jack Burroughs, and George Pierce. The Committee unanimously extended its thanks and congratulations to Treasurer Oldfield and Newsletter Editor Wilkin for the ingenuity and perseverance that they have shown in their respective offices. The meeting was adjourned at about 2:00 P.M. and many of the faithful retired to the Charles River Dartmouth Club's Annual "Tea Dance." Among those present for that gala affair and for the 45 dinner that followed were the Pierces, Robinsons, Cutlers, Van Duzers, Brooks, Michaels, Southwicks, Whites, and Leggats. Shorty had things well in hand, and the whole arrangement was perfect.

Besides being quite optimistic about this year's 45 showing in the Alumni Fund campaign, Ellie Mover mentioned that the enthusiasm shown by this year's class agents boded well for the future. He feels, and we all concur, that every year we are knitting the long-unravelled threads of class unity closer and closer together, and that the Dartmouth experience each year means more and more to you.

Ellie, incidentally, was just elected Deputy Chief of the Newton (Mass.) Police Auxiliary, and was re-elected President of the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association. And while speaking of the Police Auxiliary, Jack Wachtel has just retired as Chief of the Scarsdale, N. Y., auxiliary. With Wachtel in New York, Mover in Mass., and Judge Michael in New Hampshire, the law seems to be in good hands.

BOXING THE COMPASS: Newsletter Editor Gene Wilkin has been named a vicenresident of the Guy Gannett Broadcasting Services Gene, general manager of the comnanv and of WGAN-TV, Portland, Me., was previously associated with the Cherry and Webb Broadcasting Co., was employed by an advertising agency, as assistant to the of a large Pawtucket, R. I. printing company, and was a surety representative for an insurance company. Congratulations to Fred Berthold, dean of Dartmouth's Tucker Foundation, on his being granted one of the five Danforth Associate Awards. This will take Fred on a year's leave-of-absence to Harvard where we Boston alumni will have a better chance to get to know an outstanding classmate. Jim MacPherson serves as vice-president of the Vita Pakt Citrus Products Co. of Covina, Calif., with offices in New York at 360 East 65th St. Johnny Callaghan, Major, U.S. Army, was recently assigned to the 7th Infantry Division in Korea as deputy commander of the division's 2nd Battle Group. Emil Bernier has moved East from California and as a chemical engineer is now associated with Olin-Mathieson Chemical Corp. in New Haven. Eastern Sales Manager for the Kraft Bag Division of Gilman Paper Co. is Ted Beliit, with offices in New York and residence in Demarest, ' |

That's all for this month. Will those of you who haven't sent your Alumni Fund contribution lend a hand? And the class treasury could use a bit of attention too! See you in the fall.
