When asked if he had anything to say about the forthcoming Alumni Fund. Campaign for publication in this column, JackSaladine, our hard working Head Agent, wrote as follows: .

As you know, we climbed out of the cellar last year, but we still have a long way to go to get to the top in the Green Derby among classes in our era.

An analysis shows our chief weaknesses are in the so-called - "Century Club" group ($100 or over) in which category we had 51 when we should have had over 60. Also, we were very weak in the $25 to $50 group where we had only 27 - the lowest of any class in our group. There were over 30 who gave $10 to $20. If these classmates would raise their ante to $25 plus, it would make a big difference.

I have a feeling we are going to do better this year. It won't be for lack of trying by my swell agents if we don't, I can assure you of that! Let's really hit the top this year, where 1917 belongs!

This is the year to get behind Jack and his faithful workers and put 1917 in the driver's seat. As I have tried to stress on previous occasions, participation is terrifically important when final standings are reckoned. Every single contribution counts, so even though you cannot be one of the larger contributors, give what you can and be counted. A dollar will do the trick if that is what you can afford.

In my January notes it was good to report that Marie Swett was at home and seemingly greatly improved after months of convalescence following the accident that had hospitalized her. Gil's classmates and their wives will be saddened to learn that on January 11, Marie slipped quietly away, after a return to the hospital. She had waged a gallant fight for three years against terrific physical handicaps. All of us who remember her gay personality at all kinds of Dartmouth gatherings will surely cherish those memories. Brief services were held at Sarasota and interment took place a few days later at Ithaca, N. Y. The Sarasota services were attended by the following '17ers: Sumner and Charlotte Emerson, George and Gertrude Gregory, Jack and Delma Hill and Angus Black. The sympathies of all go to Gil. '

Bill Eaton and Bob and Gail Boynton very recently were among a group of 35 alumni attending a conference in Hanover known as Dartmouth Horizons. These conferences are intended to bring groups of alumni up to date on the new curriculum, the rejuvenated graduate schools, the recently completed building program, and college finances. They report that they were greatly impressed with the quality of the teaching and the efforts being made to make the College outstanding in all departments.

An as yet unconfirmed report has been received that Duke and Dot Howe are about to embark on a cruise of the Caribbean following which Duke plans to attend a bankers' convention at Miami. As the conclusion of the convention he and Dot will visit friends on the Florida West coast.

After spending Thanksgiving week with their daughter, Barbara and her family at St. Louis, Mott and Fran Brown spent Christmas week with Kay and her family at Grosse Pointe Park, Mich. When last heard from they were looking forward to a flight to San Francisco for a visit with Eleanor and Ed Shev and granddaughter Anne.

Milly Holden, who has been in a convalescent home at Norwood, Mass., since about the time that Bunny died in 1958, passed away on December 18. Milly apparently had been well and in good spirits until stricken with a coronary thrombosis from which she failed to recover. Private funeral services, which Spique and RubyMaclntyre attended, were held at Norwood on December 20.

Under date of January 18, Bill Birtwell wrote that he and Helen were back in Englewood, Fla., for the winter months. They arrived there on the 10th and already had seen Larry and Lucile Nourse at So. Venice.

Vic Smith journeyed to Hanover during January to attend the winter meeting of the Alumni Council. It must have been a most interesting weekend for Vic because, in addition to the Council meetings, it was the time of the reception and banquet in honor of the '62 football team, sponsdred jointly by the Alumni Council and the Athletic Council.

Others planning a tour of the Caribbean during February are Bob and Anita Scott and Norm and Mary McCulloch who are joining a group sailing from Ft. Lauderdale on February 8 on the "S.S. Riviera." The 13-day cruise will take them to such places as the Barbados, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, the Lesser Antilles, Haiti (where Mary plans to brush up on her voodoo for possible use at future class outings) and Nassau. While at St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands they hope to see Walt and Phoebe Walters who are expected to be there at the same time.
