HIGHLIGHTING the spring term for the Hopkins Center will be a program of plays, lectures, concerts, exhibitions, and movies on the theme "The Contemporary Arts and Religion." By focusing on a single theme the faculty planners hope to provide the raw material "to encourage vigorous expression of a wide variety of views" as well as to relate the creative work of the Center to other educational experiences on campus so they supplement and stimulate each other.

The dramatic portion of the program will include productions of J.B. by Archibald MacLeish, Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett, Medea in Africa adapted from Euripides and done by the Howard University Players, and The Winner, a new play by Prof. John Finch of the Dartmouth English Department; and a presentation of three one-act verse plays: A Masque of Reason by Robert Frost '96, Angels and Devils by Prof. Richard Eberhart '26, and Charade by Prof. Thomas Vance.

The Center's galleries will have exhibitions of the paintings of Ben Shawn and Russell Cowles '09, of contemporary religion in sculpture and painting, and of sculpture by visiting artist James Rosati. Other exhibitions will present graphic arts, posters, prints by Sister Mary Corita, and architecture relating to the theme.

The many varied music offerings will include the Jewish Liturgical Band with Herbert Feder, Cantor; soprano Anna Moffo in a recital; choral and chamber music concerts, and an organ recital. Film presentations will include "Passion of Joan of Arc," "Ordet," "Journal d'un Pere," "Ewige Jude," and "Nazarin."

Artist Ben Shawn will lecture on April 4 and 5. In the following week the Jacob Ziskind Memorial Lectures will present a dialogue-discussion between Philip Wheelwright, Professor of Philosophy at the University of California, who formerly taught here, and Preston Roberts, Professor of Theology and Literature at the University of Chicago. Other lectures will be on J.B., religious drama, and contemporary church architecture.
