Greetings from the great Texas plains. The spring time seems to have passed and now it's the middle of summer, the temperature rises into the 90's daily. The trees are in full bloom, the grass is green. If it's like this now, then the summer must really be a scorcher. Speaking of hot spells I have two thoughts in mind. The first concerns the up-coming reunion. Let me quote a letter from Dave Orr: "I have one thought for your April Column ... our sth Reunion. Believe it or not, our present estimated attendance is smaller than '58 and '59.

"It looks like about 250 people will be back ('58 will have 275 and '59 - 300). I have always liked a challenge and this is one for the whole class. It has been six years since we last gathered in Hanover and every '57, especially those in the east, should attempt to be here, June 21-23; if for no other reason than to see the changes taking place.

"Add together all the events - the alumni dinner, the alumni dance in the Hopkins Center, a play, a concert, a class picnic, a class dinner, and plenty of old friends to see — and there should be no lack of incentive to return to the Hanover Plain."

Also, a letter from Bob Holland asks for any last minute ideas or thoughts that you may have that will, you feel, add to the enjoyment of the get-together.

During the reunion there will also be a bit of balloting where you can select the new slate of class officers for the coming years - until the next reunion. If you have any suggestions for the nominating committee then please drop a note to Ed Matthews (136 Corlies Ave., Pelham, N. Y.). You will be voting for the normal slate of class officers as well as for the class Executive Committee.

The second thought is for the Alumni Fund that is beginning. The class certainly set a record for its activity last year and this certainly might be used as a precedent for the activity of the coming year. However, to a certain extent the Green Derby we won last year should not obscure the fact that the money is used by the College to finance the excellent education she offers as well as the extensive building program that she has begun and must successfully complete. It may seem that I am blandly telling you of many ways to spend your money. Don't panic. By the time the Reunion rolls around you will have gotten your income tax refund back and all will be rosy again.

In the news column I am very happy to report that the Chief, the Head Man, Mr.Edward Joseph Matthews Jr. and Miss Michelle Mary McQueeny have announced their engagement and plan to be married during September. Ed is an accountant with the New York firm of Haskins & Sells. Creighton Parkes and Miss Margaret M. Barrera have announced their engagement and plan to be married in June. "Crate" is a graduate of the Harvard Med. School and at present is a resident in surgery at Roosevelt Hospital in New York. In July of this year he will become orthopedic resident at the Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, also in New York. Bruce LeFavour and Miss Patricia Saaf were married in February and are now living in Aspen, Colo. Mr. and Mrs. Kwanha Yim announce the birth of their first child, a boy, Ja-Pyong Anthony Yim, on June 4. Lt. JimTaylor was recently designated a flight surgeon in ceremonies held at the Naval School of Aviation Medicine, Pensacola, Fla. Prior to entering the service, Jim had graduated from the Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia. Ron Chilcote is teaching and working for his Ph.D. at the Institute of Hispanic American & Luso Brazilian Studies at Stanford. He is also publishing and writing for the Hispanic American Report which is put out by the Institute.

I am sorry to report the death of a classmate John E. Breitenbach during a mountain climbing expedition in Katmandu, Nepal.

Please give your thoughts for a minute to the dual enjoyment that the reunion will bring and to the importance of the annual Dartmouth Alumni Fund.

See you next month - everybody.

Skip.
