Bless old Charlie Donovan! He has generously donated space in this column to the news from the Reunion Committee. No implication here that he might be in need of a rest this month. We're grateful, nonetheless for the opportunity to dispel that ugly rumor being circulated by the Class of '44 that this is really our 21st reunion. If the College says it is our 20th, that's good enough for us. And who among us will complain about losing track of a year?
The big dates are June 18-21, 1964. Jack Meleney and his committee have really turned to in their efforts to make the reunion a memorable event for all. They have maneuvered our class into some really choice locations. We'll be staying in Massachusetts Row. These dormitories have been entirely renovated within the last few years, and we are informed that Middle Mass, at least, is full of private baths. (This might be an incentive to get your reservations in early.)
Our class cocktail party and buffet dinner will be at the Dartmouth Outing Club House and the class outing at Storrs Pond, which is very conveniently located and has a genuine, brand new, full size swimming pool. So there will be no need for extensive trips over the New Hampshire countryside. All activities will be close at hand and a big effort is being made to keep the cost of reunion as low as possible.
By this time you've probably received the first communique from the Reunion Committee and we hope you've already indicated your plan to return. Early indications are that we will have a tremendous turnout of classmates and their families. Letting Jack and his committee know your intentions as soon as possible is important, by the way, for it helps them firm up their plans and commitments for facilities.
The College has approved the opening of the dormitories for the use of returning class members beginning Thursday, June 18. So those of you who want to plan a more leisurely stay on the campus may arrive a day ahead of the crowd. The class tent will be up Thursday evening with beer, ice, and setups for social activity as the spirit moves you. The Dartmouth Players will also have a performance in Hopkins Center Theatre on that evening. The golf course and the tennis courts will, of course, be available for the early arrivals, as well as throughout the weekend. There will be an Alumni Golf Tournament and special prizes for '43 participants.
On Friday afternoon there will be special programs at the graduate schools open to all interested alumni. There will be also other programs of interest throughout the weekend for those intellectually inclined. Frequent guided tours of Hopkins Center will be conducted for those who have not yet seen this magnificent building - as well as those who have and want to go again. There are many wonderful exhibits, changing all the time.
On Friday evening the program picks up at a fast pace with a dinner at Leverone Field House, followed by the President's Reception, The Dartmouth Players at Hopkins Center, and an Alumni Dance at the Top of the Hop and the Penthouse Terrace under a beautiful June moon.
From then on Until Sunday noon, there will be activities galore for juniors and seniors alike, but plenty of time for play, visiting and wistful reminiscence. Make your plans now to attend your 20th, for a weekend you'll long remember.
