The Alumni Fund Campaign Staff was kind enough to process and mail a class Special Bulletin around March 25. I hope you read it and agree with me that the success of the 50th year Campaign is the job of every one of us. Your prompt response to the staff campaign material will save a lot of staff work and follow up headaches. At this writing before April 1, eight gifts have been reported to me. This 21% of our scoring base.
On March 14, a good friend of us all, John Hale McElroy died at Albany, N. Y. Those of you who were at the 60th reunion will remember John and his two charming daughters. He had an interesting and worthwhile life; I will try to give more details in the In Memoriam columns. I am sure the whole class joins in extending its sincerest sympathy to the family.
The other evening Pray Wadham called me up and as we finished he wanted to know if March 19 meant anything to me. I told him indeed it did - I was looking forward to it with great pleasure (and was not disappointed). He wished me many happy returns and we both got a little heart warming out of our visit. If you will look at your list of Oct. 2, 1962 you will find four names on it whose birthdays are in May and four more who were born in June. How about contacting by mail, telephone, or in some other way one or all of these eight old friends and wishing them well on their birthday? I am sure they would get as much pleasure as I did from my talk with Pray.
An interesting letter from Ned Kenerson in Phoenix, Ariz., arrived a day after my April notes had been put in the mail. Another letter, from Tucson, came in shortly before these notes were in the mill. In his earlier letter Ned told of attending a Dartmouth luncheon with Horace Kidger at the Yacht Club on Anna Maria (Fla.) Island. Charlotte was unfortunate enough to sprain her ankle and x-rays later showed a broken bone. At latest reports she was able to get around some without a cane and was reasonably comfortable. At Sarasota they attended Ivy League dinner meeting and a luncheon. Visited with Warren Kendall '99, Harold Niles '07, Roger Brown '05 and others. They also visited at the home of Professor Morrison and Mrs. Charlotte (Ford) Morrison '26, Warren Kendall '99 and Frederick Smith (President Emeritus of New Hampton Institute). Ned's son John '28 and wife joined him at Phoenix. At Tucson Ned writes of a luncheon given to Orton Hicks '21, vice-president of the College. Ned's "treat of the month" was a reunion with our Tute Worthen. I wish I had room to tell of Tute's outstanding professional record as an engineer in Arizona, Hawaii, and elsewhere. We all hope that Ned with his good rest in the sun and Charlotte with her ankle back in fine working order will be home and black in stride long before these notes get to you.
Through Wadham, he mentioned hearing from Andy Perham and his wife Mazie. I only wish that all Thayer School men would write in like Andy does. He also mentioned Dana Whipple and his wife Isabel. We missed Dana at the reunion - he is not long in size but his happy smile and cheerful outlook make him a good friend and companion.
I am afraid I have exceeded the word limitation imposed on the "Veterans Classes" grouping to which this year we have been promoted. A happy and healthy spring-time to you all, after .the long winter. Please get your Alumni Fund gift in now if you have not already done so.
