Summer visitors to the Hanover Plain included Bill and Helen Grant from nearby Contoocook (Bill is processing a new birthday card which is the best ever); Lou and Jean Stone; George and Elisa Bingham, touring New England and Nova Scotia; Bob Proctor; Jerry Kerwin, all the way from California for his first visit to the College in many years; Bill McMahon; Mose and Florence Robinson, Gordon and Aurelia Meader, and Greif and Katherine Raible. There may have been others that your Secretary missed.
Quoting in part from a nice letter from Donald Leigh, "I do appreciate these annual greetings, although I have failed to acknowledge them, but I especially enjoyed this one of the old freshman poster. Can it be possible that it will be fifty years come September when we first looked upon this set of instructions? I guess it must be when the oldest of my four children has passed his 44th birthday, and the oldest of my 14 grandchildren was graduated from high school last June."
Attending the N. Y. class luncheon early in June were Win Batchelder, Nick Sandoe, Tom Bresnahan, Budd Welsh, Mose Robinson, Ray Legg, Paul Halloran, Bill McMahon, Bill Goldberg, Wentz Ruml, Lou Munro, Harry Colwell, Ken Huntington (Ken and Marge were also in Hanover and Orford, and Ken made a short stay in Dick's House with an ailing hip), and Dick Dudensing - truly a fine turnout. Ed and BeaMartin toured Ireland, Scotland, and England during the early summer - reported generally fine weather and a good trip. Norris Hodgkins received a fine write-up in a Southern Pines, N. C., paper and was honored at a public reception when he retired after 28 years on the board of education. Norris is president of the Citizens Bank and Trust Company, was president of the local hospital, the Sandhills Kiwanis Club and the 12 county Boy Scout Council, receiving the high Silver Beaver award for many years of scouting service in various capacities. Congratulations to Norris on his well deserved honors for his long time service to the community.
Pat Leonhard is thinking about our 50th reunion already, but we are trying to persuade Pat to come to Hanover long before that event in 1969. Jack Clark reports a tour of New England with Betty and a stop for dinner with Jim and Mary Davis in Henniker, N. H. Larry and Mary McCutcheon spent seven weeks fishing in Canada, as is their custom, with fine results, and also spent some time in Old Lyme, Conn., and may hit Nova Scotia before returning to Florida. Jim and Paula Stone are on another of their long trips abroad and among other spots they visited was Russia. Henry Siegbert reports that he and Marion returned in June from a ten weeks' trip to Europe and "have been greeted with tractors and plows excavating for the new Interstate 87 - maybe we should be thankful that the road is going through a cut 65 feet deep, but in the meantime you can imagine the kind of a summer we face." The Siegberts have a lovely home in White Plains, N. Y.
Paul (The Champ) Clements writes with humor of his ailments, quoting, "On October 25 I had a bad heart attack. However, after a complete rest in Curacao and following my doctor's orders carefully, I have come to where I can do most things but take no chances. Now that I have tangled with cancer, heart and diabetes I suppose a hangnail will take me off. Hope you had a good day for Eddie's (Fiske golf at Kennebunkport, Me.) party. The build-up was terrific. I so wished that I could have been there." (Secretary's note - this was fully covered in Win Batchelder's Smoke Signal of August 20.)
John Fornacca, still in Rome and the host to many Dartmouth men over the years, writes: "I am really hoping to get to Hanover one of these days for a reunion. Right now I am busy in this new line of business (investments) which is very interesting and fascinating. When I retire I plan to take a trip around the world and will surely visit my home state of New Hampshire." Speaking of New Hampshire, Jack McCrillis has reorganized his insurance business and is now located at 17 Depot Street in Newport - the new name is McCrillis and Eldredge Insurance - Jack is still connected with the company but his son and son-in-law are probably doing all the work - that is the way it should be. Paul (the Admiral) Halloran, always a good correspondent over many years, reports, "Your unique reminder that we entered 50 years ago 'doubles in brass' for a birthday remembrance. This is to say thanks in spite of the cold hard facts re old fuds, now politely called 'Senior Citizens.' I would like to say 'see you in Hanover' but this is unlikely - or 'See you in Florida' - again my Florida days are history. Even without the roamings I seem to be confronted with a schedule - which encompasses several avocations. However, I do manage to get a swim in my pool every day and the water is cold, - from an artesian well." Stan Mauk, former member of the Alumni Council, thanks the class for reminding him of his advancing age and states that the card came right on the dot, which is a miracle. "I certainly hope to start getting back to Hanover again soon, but lately it has been impossible because of Alice's mother's condition." Try and make Woodstock-Hanover - but these notes will reach you after that great event.
A nice note from Mrs. J. Raymond Stevens - the In Memoriam notice will appear in this or a subsequent issue - quoting "I know Ray would be most pleased and touched if he could but know about the book you have donated with his name to the Library. I will cherish the thought."
As these notes are being scrambled together in late August, the following classmates are expected for golf or cocktails and dinner at the Kittansett Club in Marion, Mass., Stu Russell, Cotty Larmon, Bunny Collins, Ed Martin, Fat Jackson (our host for cocktails), Win Batchelder, Bob Proctor, Ed Fiske, Fred Daley, Jim Davis, Art Havlin, Herb Fleming, and Jack Clark. Batch gave the event full publicity in his Smoke Signal and we hope for a larger turnout from the Boston '19ers. Your Secretary will be on hand also. Wallie Baker reports a trip to Tucson, Ariz., to visit his son Wallace Jr. '46, who is now a full Professor of Law at the University of Arizona. The Bakers also went down the west coast to Mexico visiting the interesting Mexican fishing villages along the Gulf of California.
Be sure and see the Big Green football team in action this fall - they won't win them all but should put on a great show.
