The Dartmouth Club of Oregon held its annual dinner meeting April 27 at the Mallory Hotel in Portland. Attendance was very good - with about 50 alumni, wives, one stray Princeton alumnus, newly ordained members of the Class of 1969 and parents attending.
Following a social hour and an excellent steak dinner, Blake Hering '53 presented a slate of nominees for office. Unanimously elected were Barney McPhillips '50, president; Chuck Luker '53, vice president (reelected), and Sumner Sharpe '58, secretarytreasurer. Put out to pasture were Jack Crowell '52 (president for the last two years), and Cam Richardson '52 (secretarytreasurer for the last five years). The two received a warm round of applause for a job well done for the College and the Club.
Sam Martin '21, enrollment chairman, reported that 31 applications were completed this year and that twelve had been accepted. Of these twelve, seven were definitely going and he introduced several of the new students.
The highlight of the evening was a very interesting talk on "Pioneering at Dartmouth" given by Nick Sandoe '45. Nick illustrated his talk with a showing of the new filmstrip, "Project ABC."
On August 7, the annual family picnic was held at Lewis and Clark College in Portland. Attendance was excellent with 46 people - alumni, students, and families. Unintentionally, it ended up as a joint Amherst-Dartmouth picnic, an enjoyable combination. On the scene were Arthur Christensen '40, Paul Hanlon '43, Bob Straub '43, Sumner Sharpe '58, Blake Hering '53, Barney McPhillips '50, Frank Youngman '45, Jack Crowell '52, Jack Devanny '58, John Coughlin '66, Andy Kerr '66, Alan Dennison '69, John Buttler '45, Dave Lee '54, Jud Goldsmith '61, and Dick Morgan '63. Pres. Barney, caterer, provided us with some fine delicatessen food, and the swimming pool was well used, as we were blessed with some outstanding weather.
