Crosby Hoar, in reply to a birthday greeting replied: "You expressed the hope that Margaret and I were well. She is, I am happy to report. I had a stroke in March. At the time my doctor predicted a rapid and complete recovery. Actually it was slow and not yet complete, as this bad writing indicates. However, the impairment in penmanship and some loss in physical energy are the chief deficiencies remaining and time may remove them." (Crosby's penmanship, at that, is better than most of you guys; S. L. R.)
Stacey Irish wrote on September 20, of his family: "Edy, my daughter, is hoping to get out of the hospital tomorrow. She has had trouble with severe pains in her back, and has been under hospital care since September 4. Our daughter, Ruth McHugh, and her husband, Bob, having only one child (Steve), have adopted a month-old daughter, who is named Jennifer. They plan to bring her to see us soon."
Ray Marsh, in response to a wedding anniversary greeting, reports: "I read them to Lillian promptly. She no longer reads but she understands and appreciates them. Lillian is nearly helpless in a nursing home where I visit her daily. Fortunately she does not appear to suffer physical pain. Much of the time she is comfortable, and some of the time cheerful.
"My daughter and her family, with whom I had lived for two and a half years, were transferred to Hong Kong in the summer where her husband is on the staff of the American Consulate.
"So, on July 15 I moved to the Cosmos Club, of which I am a Senior Member. It was quite a job to shoe-horn me into one room. This is a fine place to live, and under the circumstances I am very fortunate."
Larry and Dorothy Symmes have been traveling again. "We went to California to attend the wedding of a grandson, then flew back to New York and to Caracas to catch up with a cruise boat that had sailed without us. We came back on it, skirting a hurricane which was considerably disturbing even at a distance of 300 miles."
