Twenty-eighters everywhere will be saddened to learn that their friend and former class president, George Pasfield died on October 29 of a heart attack. He was with JackHerpel and George Emery who Were spending the night on his boat on the Chesapeake River, and died while returning from dinner ashore. Of all our classmates, none had greater loyalty to the college than George, as he evidenced in so many ways.
Bill Morton and Fred Ingram '29 started a George Pasfield Memorial Fund and we know that many of George's friends will want to contribute to it.
The annual '28 Fall Reunion on the weekend of October 8-10 was a wonderful one with 72 taking part, and everyone had a fine time. As usual we were fortunate to have the facilities of the Norwich Inn and Motel, plus the Rolling Hills Motel. Chairman Herb Sensenig had everything running like clockwork including the '28 bus which took us from Norwich to the proper portal at Memorial Stadium, and picked us up afterwards. President Bill Morton got his usual invitation on the loudspeaker at half-time ("The Class of 1928, whose numerals are emblazoned on the Baker Memorial Library, invites ... We missed regulars like the Pasfields, who were on a shakedown cruise down Chesapeake Bay on their new 3 8-foot cruiser, and the Herpels, Cornie having broken an ankle bone in Paris the week before, and the George Kleins who couldn't get away.
At the cocktail party after the game there was a lot of talk about the "Grandchild Derby" — Al Willey thought he was tops with ten until he talked to Jack Noeltner who has 16 - seven from his two children, and nine from his second wife's three sons. Al Willey had as his guests his oldest grandchild and her father, and Topper Robinson had his grandson, Chris, with him. MartyFltzpatrick has eight grandchildren, all boys.
John Phillips had several University of Pennsylvania guests who enjoyed the party, including Jim Traynor, a trustee of the University. Jack Herpel gives you the attendance list in the " '26 Campaigner."
News picked up at the Norwich Inn party: Red Jenkins flew Navy planes to Alaska and Hawaii this summer. The head cheerleader this year (the cold-looking Indian at the football games) is Bill Hobson's son. We are indebted to Bill for sending us a set of enlargements of the excellent candid shots he took during the evening. They will be displayed at next year's Fall Reunion and the New York dinner on January 19.
From Ham and Anne Hankins we heard of a wonderful four-and-a-half-week trip they recently made in Africa - Johannesburg, Kruger, Victoria Falls, and its game preserve, a boat ride on the Zambezi River, then to Nairobi, at the base of Mt. Kilimanjaro, Ngorongto Crater (10 x 12 miles, and full of animals), Lake Manyara in Kenya, the Tree Top Hotel in Nyeri, Murcheson Falls where they saw hundreds of elephants, hippos, and crocodiles. Their son, Tim, is in his fifth year at Thayer School, and Frank '65 is a Navy flier at Pensacola.
Chuck and Nona Bruder left three days after the reunion for a few days in Italy on their way to Nairobi for a ten-day safari.
Craw Pollock, marketing vice president of the Green Giant Company, has just introduced thirty new products for his company. "Newsweek" quotes Craw: "We are compressing a decade of new-product progress into one year." "News-week" also said Craw invented the TV dinner while working for C. A. Swanson and Sons. Craw came to Green Giant in 1960, and, still the innovator, put their frozen vegetables into boilin-the-bag pouches and added a seasoned butter sauce that was unlike anything the competition offered.
In ordering your own or gift subscriptions, don't fail to send them to Ken Turner. His K. W. Turner Agency, Tomkins Cove, N. Y., will give you wonderful service.
Jack Rose is recovering at his home in La Jolla, Calif, from a cervical laminectomy (a delayed development from the broken back at our 25th reunion). He spent September in the hospital and all of August "in pre-hospital pain." On the mend, he says, thanks to daily swims in Ted Geisel's '25 pool. His big interest now is finding a wife for the golden years."
Warren Burding and Hazel Stuart Hackett, of Toronto, Canada, were married September 29 in the Reformed Church, Bronxville, N. Y., in a small wedding ceremony. BillHeep, Court Keller, Bill Treanor and their wives were present in addition to the family. Hazel is the sister of Ruth, John Weser's wife. Warren and Hazel sailed on the "Queen Mary" on October 1 for a four- week European trip.
Mary and I with our youngest son, Steve (14) had a nice vacation in Italy, Germany, and Ireland, October 18 to November 3.
Don't miss the annual '28 mid-winter dinner in New York, January 19 at the Dartmouth Club. Chairman Hank Walker is arranging a good program.
