The youngest living member of our class, Henry Norton, reached his 80th birthday last October. (Incidentally, Harold Haskell and Shirley Cunningham are only two months older than Henry.) No one in the class has achieved success in so large a variety of undertakings as Henry.
At present, in his "retirement," he is giving a series of 61 lectures at the University of California Extension in San Francisco, a course for which he had spent two years in preparation and which he first delivered at the College of Marin. This course is entitled "The Evolution of Civilization" with the sub-title The Autobiography of Mankind.
The San Francisco Examiner gives a somewhat detailed account of Henry's career. I quote in part: "Scholar, business executive, author, expert on foreign affairs, traffic expert, president of a nuclear laboratory, and of a New York railroad, linguist, world traveler, but most of all a learned student of mankind." We wish Henry many more years of exciting activity.
Quite surprisingly, Mildred and I broke all precedents; we packed up and flew to Florida to join the little '05 colony in the vicinity of Clearwater for a two-week vacation. As I write, we are enjoying some delightful weather at Clearwater Beach in this Christmas season. We owe a debt of gratitude to John Bell and Fred Chase for securing very comfortable quarters in an apartment with a view across the bay to the mainland and in easy walking distance to the extensive beach to the west, with its white sand and a view out over the vast Gulf of Mexico.
We have been well rewarded for choosing Clearwater Beach, for we have had pleasant visits and interesting drives with five of the 05 family: Fred Chase, John and LucyBell, and Dick and Mabel Tolman. All seem in excellent health, except that Mabel is not very strong. We are sorry that we shall miss seeing C.C, Hills, for he is in Miami for two months to be near his daughter; also Charlie and Ruth Goodrich, for he is in New Hampshire at home recuperating satisfactorily from an operation. Unfortunately, Roger and Jane Brown will arrive down here a few days too late for us to see them. C.C.'s address is 6320 Biscayne Bou- levard, Miami, Fla. 33138.
With sadness we report that death has taken two of our men: William Jackson, November 18, and on the 26th of that month Walter G. Small passed on. Though Walter had not attended our reunions in recent years, he maintained a loyal interest in the class. We have had no news of William for some time.
