Last month in order to meet the editor's deadline for these notes, we had to do our chore before leaving for a five-day meeting at Las Vegas where floor shows, golf, and gambling occupied most of our attention. This time the deadline is two days after the New Year's weekend; so we must necessarily apply ourselves to the task before taking off for our first visit of the winter season to North Conway, where it is expected that skiing, bridge, and TV football games will engage our attention.

A welcome note from Ed Burns, occasioned by the untimely passing of JohnnyFlynn, closed with the following paragraph: "I will just give you a brief preview of our past and future activities. First, our love is cruising and we purchased a new boat this past fall and immediately took it to Florida. We had every intention of stopping to see George Zahm but due to the fact that we were in a hurry, we only called him on the telephone and told him that we would call him upon our return to the Ft. Lauderdale area some time the first of February. We plan to have the Don Hunts accompany us again this year on a cruise in southern waters. I notice that a few other Dartmouth men are doing the same thing so we hope that we will run into some mutual friends."

Late last fall a news release from Birmingham, Ala., opened with the following announcement: "Speaking to an overflow audience at Miles College's matriculation day program, attorney, statesman, philanthropist, civic leader. Kenneth Montgomery of Northbrook, Ill., held the audience at rapt attention as he gave directions for making useful lives in this fast changing society to the Miles College undergraduates."

Hal Rider has taken on further responsibilities through his election as a director of the University of Connecticut Foundation, formed last fall for the purpose of "financing those special needs of a major public university which the state's taxpayers cannot be reasonably expected to support." Gifts will be used to support special programs such as distinguished faculty awards, library enrichment, scholarships, a new faculty-alumni center and similar projects. Hal has long been associated with organizations which focus on educational progress. He served as a director of the UConn Branch building fund campaign and is a trustee of the Ferguson Library, local representative of the New England College Fund, and a member of the Newcomer Society in North America, in addition to being a member of many civic, charitable and banking organizations.

Mott Garlock's name again appeared in the news recently when he was the guest speaker at a meeting of the Western Massachusetts Association of Credit Executives, Inc. at Thompsonville, Conn. His topic was "Let's look at the outlook for 1965."

There's no doubt but that other classmates are engaged in civic, educational, charitable and other similar activities which are worthy of reporting in this column. But your secretary's perspicacity is insufficient to enable him to visualize the facts. This is just another way of saying: "Please - let's have some news!"
