Two graduate students at Thayer School of Engineering have won the Design News Award for projects designed to aid industry. John E. Christiansen Jr. of Keene, N. H. and Dale E. Runge of Higginsville, Mo., devised a plan to improve production of rock-drill bits in conjunction with the Joy Manufacturing Co., of Claremont, N. H. The students received cash awards and individual plaques in the class competition sponsored by DesignNews, a professional publication.

The Student Workshops of Hopkins Center have an added extracurricular program beginning this term for work in fine metals, under the direction of Frederick Dodson of Acworth, N. H., who will instruct in the making of jewelry, holloware, flatware and metal spinning, as well as lapidary work. In addition to the lapidary equipment already in the shop, facilities have been added for work in lost wax, centrifugal casting and raising, and a new lathe for metal spinning is also being installed.
