The first, formal meeting of the Dartmouth Club of Santa Barbara was held January 26, 1965 at the University Club for election of this year's officers and to exhibit the 1964 Football Highlights film as well as the excellent college strip film used by our active enrollment committee. There were fifteen alumni, four high school guests, and a former Hanover resident, Byron W. Bailey, D.D.S., in attendance.
The business portion of the meeting was chaired by Fred Long 'll, who was reelected president on a unanimous ballot that included the following officers: Les McFadden '26, vice president, and Jim Oberlander'53, secretary-treasurer.
Ken Riley '49, acting secretary, reported on the Club's December 7 luncheon meeting at his home where local alumni heard George Colton '35 of the College Development Office speak on the continuing evolution of the College and the recent administration and faculty policies that have been announced to meet the changing times. This informative gathering drew 20 of this area's local supporters and highlighted recent efforts to organize participation of alumni in and around Santa Barbara. Additionally Ken reviewed his attendance last year, with Mary Lou and his three children, at the College's first Alumni College.
The aggressive activities of the hardworking enrollment committee were reported on by Dr. Ferris (Tommy) Thompson '54, chairman. Seasoned stalwarts assisting Tommy in recent years include: Mark Lansburgh '49, former chairman for many years, Dr. Kevin Fay '39, Ray Barrett '46, Jim Oberlander '53, Dr. Tom Kong '54, Tom Connor '54, and Fred Long '11.
The Dartmouth Club of Santa Barbara was formally organized and recognized by the College in January 1964, becoming the 136th Dartmouth Club. In keeping with the rather unrushed and gracious climate of this sub-tropical paradise, four quarterly meetings have been planned for the first year. Hopefully, informal monthly luncheons will be staged for those of the immediate city area.
