From the Stoughton (Mass.) Weekly Independent we learn of the sad death, after a short illness, of George W. Denison, at the age of 46. The sincere sympathy of his Dartmouth classmates is extended to his wife Dorothy and to his family. A more complete account is found in the In Memoriam section of this issue of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE.
Reuel Denney, an assistant professor at the University of Chicago, attended the twentieth annual conference of the Graduate Library School held at the University last June. Reuel is the co-author, with David Reisman, of TheLonely Crowd, recently published by Anchor.
A Syracuse (N. Y.) newspaper recently announced that Bob Hosmer has purchased the DeBoer Manufacturing Co., 1540 State St., that city. The firm was founded in 1910 and manufactures the DeBoer short-bed rail, with 1955 sales in every state of the Union. It is the familiar turnbuckle device locking together upright heads and foots of beds on store display. The company also manufactures dollies, hand-trucks and mirror-hanging rails. Bob was formerly president of the Bacon-Warren Manufacturing Co., and he and his associates owned the Easthampton Rubber Thread Co., producing latex thread by a patented process, now licensed out on royalty. He lives with his wife and two children at 108 Hampshire Road in Syracuse.
Ray Bartlett and wife Dorothy proudly announce the arrival of their second child, Tracy Young Bartlett, on October 16. Their first child, Candace, was born March 4, 1952. Ray is vice president in charge of sales of Talon, Inc. (Zippers) in New York City and lives with his wife and family at Bay Crest, Huntington, Long Island. Congratulations and best wishes to the Bartletts and to young Tracy!
Another newsy letter from George Hahninforms us of a most interesting summer, towit:
"About the middle of July we flew to Scotland - toured a bit of that country and were particularly charmed by Edinburgh and the Scottish Loch district. We then drove through the English Lakes region, - boating on Lake Windemere, climbing a few of the smaller mountains and a few church steeples (the interior) en route. Thence to London and Oxford. We lived at Oxford in Lady Margaret Hall and attended the Fourteenth British Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecology. I gave a talk on supervoltage irradiation therapy in carcinoma of the cervix. (I have trouble spelling these terms, much less understand them. ED.) We stayed about a week and in addition to the scientific part of the program, enjoyed meeting gynecologists from all over the British Empire. From Oxford to Holland, where the expression is 'a herring a day keeps the doctor away' - we got so that we expected to eat cheese and herring every morning for breakfast! We then visited Scandinavia spent quite a bit of time in hospitals in Stockholm and Oslo, which incidentally are very modern. Thence an S.A.S. airliner back to America to end our first, and I hope not our last, European experience."
Would that I had more correspondents like George, who also reports that Bill Mackinney has resigned his position with Westinghouse and is now in the lamp and bulb division of the Rumsey Electric Co., 7th and Arch Sts., Philadelphia. Rumsey is one of the largest electrical distributing firms in the East. Good luck to Bill in his new connection and to George - thanks a million for the interesting letter!
To each and every one of you - please accept the best wishes of your Secretary for a Happy Holiday Season. May the New Year bring good health, happiness and success to you and to your families. May it also bring a few more letters than 1955 brought!
