We received a clipping from the February 26 Cleveland Plain Dealer announcing the organization of a new company known as the Summit Properties, Akron, which has filed a registration statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission on a proposed public offering of 80,000 shares. The proceeds will be used to purchase the Second National Building in Akron. This is the second largest building in the city. One of the five trustees of this new realty investment trust is none other than our Classmate Jack (Harold W.) Slabaugh. We understand that Jack's income from this new endeavor will be used to support Dartmouth projects, including entertainment of Classmates whenever and wherever he meets them. So be sure to look him up whenever you are in town or he is in your town.
We have received very favorable comments from several Classmates stating how happy they were to receive the new Class Directory sent out recently by Jack Bingham. We take this occasion to thank Jack for the Class for many of the novel ideas which he has incorporated into his Newsletters.
Last February we received a nice letter from Clem McRride, thanking us for our birthday card, which I quote in part. "I really have no news, Tom. We lead a life that reminds me some of the Vermont hill country - quiet. Enjoyed a telephone conversation with Genie Geran recently when he 'phoned me from Brooklyn. Had a nice letter from Ned Ross on my birthday. I also hear from Rog Howland, Syl Morey and Red Wilson each Christmas, so all in all I've not lost touch with Dartmouth."
Hubie McDonough and Jack Bingham spent a very happy day on March 14 with Eve and Bill Montgomery. Jack writes: "We had a fine feed and much conversation. No TV panelists could have been more interesting on world and national affairs than the discussion between Hubie and Bill."
Tom Tarrant writes: "We had a good turnout for the Class Agents' dinner in New York. Steve Mahoney, Syl Morey, IlenriVanZelm, Jasper Johnston, and I showed up. Tom plans to come to Boston shortly for his annual check-up with his eye doctor. He is planning to have his second cataract removed sometime in the near future. Dot and Steve Mahoney recently had dinner at the Tarrants'."
Our birthday card inspired Sewall Strout to write the following verse.
Your birthday card was nice indeed Though at my age there is no need To recognize each passing year They pass too frequently I fear. But, after all, it's nothing new All generations grow old too. Youth now so full of vim and vigor Will later have to watch its figure With growing stiffness in the knees Will thank the Lord for memories Of Hanover, as we now do, When youth's as old as I and you.
Ralph and Rika Norton spent a couple of weeks recently at Belleair Beach, which is just south of Clearwater, Fla. Ralph has many interests around Middlebury, Vt., and is president of the Middlebury Inn, Inc. You had better plan to stay there the next time you are in Vermont.
Charlie Benesch, who has a beautiful waterfront home in St. Petersburg, is planning to sail from Ft. Lauderdale on April 30 for a world cruise.
In response to our birthday card Phil Everett writes: "There isn't much news about me because I rarely get out, and when I do can only walk about five blocks." He was much interested in one of . the last newsletters quoting Dr. Jeremy Belknapp of Dover. Phil became a member of Dr. Belknapp's Church on September 21, 1913.
Dwight and Peg Sargent are in Europe. Russ Smith is now recovering from chest surgery. He was in the hospital from March 21 to April 3. He writes that his activities are still badly curtailed.
The Shirleys are very pleased to announce another grandchild - Shirley Ann Day, born on March 9, 1965, to our Betty Day of Orange, Calif. This makes a total of eight grandchildren, so we are getting up into the big leagues.
Lester Granger wrote Tom Bryant recently saying how happy he was to have chosen to continue with Dillard University on a post-retirement assignment, rather than being inactive at the time of his great sorrow.
We recently saw a letter from Grace Deak stating that Bill is afflicted with arteriosclerosis and is in the Veterans Hospital in Coatesville, Pa. We are sure that he would appreciate a letter from any of our Classmates. His home address is 834 Woodward Drive, Greenfields, Reading, Pa.
Peg and Red Wilson have just returned from a very happy experience while on a 3½-months' trip through California. We quote in part from Red's letter. "We covered a fair amount of ground while in California and were fortunate in meeting up with many old friends, including some '18ers. In Palm Desert we spent many pleasant hours with Stew and Helen Teaze, and on our way back to Los Angeles we stopped over in Claremont for a delightful lunch and afternoon visit with Walt and Edith Wiley. Later we spent a pleasant and stimulating evening with Bob and Mildred Fish. I am glad to report that Bob was in brilliant form in spite of his arthritis. He has had a rugged time. Our time on the Peninsular was limited, but come another year I am hopeful we shall get to see Bill Mudgett and Eddie Butts.
"At Laguna Beach we thought we had missed Herm and Laura Whitmore so were especially pleased to catch up with them over cocktails at a select little party in Emerald Bay hosted by Eddie Bowen '20 and his charming wife Virginia." Red then sent a picture of Stew and Helen Teaze and himself taken at the Wilson's Motel in Palm Desert when Stew and Helen Teaze were returning from the El Dorado Country Club after winning their match in an interclub mixed doubles tournament, impressively polishing off their youthful opponents.
Ernie Earley sent a long letter from AlRice, in which was enclosed a picture showing Marge and Al standing either side of a 108-1b. tarpon, taken at the Everglades Rod & Gun Club in Everglades City, Fla.
Hi Belding writes from Chicago: "Just had a letter from Al Sibbernsen, who said he and Grace had been under the weather." Hi and Rose spent five weeks on the Coast and while there attended their granddaughter's wedding. Hi writes: "Boy, does that make me feel old! She is the daughter of my son Hi, Class of 1940." Hi has retired from Blyth and Co., but keeps fairly active and never has a sick day. He arrived at 70 last December 17.
Once again we wish to extend to TomBryant and his team the appreciation of the Class of 1918 for their outstanding Alumni Fund accomplishment. We are indeed fortunate to have someone with the organizing ability of Tom Bryant, who has the patience and the stamina to write literally hundreds of letters during the course of the year to keep his team interested and to express appreciation to any Classmate who has more than met expectations in his gift. Please take a minute, drop him a line and tell him how much you appreciate what he and his team of workers has done.
I did not hear a word from anyone about the reservations I have at the Chieftain Motel for Classmates for the first football game this next fall. The Class does plan to run the usual luncheon and get-together before the first football game this next fall. So make your plans early to be there. Remember, it is always good fun to be together, and time's running out.
Please remember to drop me a line about your summer activities so that I will have something reasonably current for the first issue of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE in the fall. Have a good summer!
