Off we go on another season of following the progress of the Great Class of '57. Many thanks to those of you who helped fill the mailbag during the summer hiatus. Before digging into that mailbag, here is the first of numerous reminders that in nine months we'll be gathering in Hanover for the Big Tenth. A bit of advice. . . start the planning now!
On the business front, Wendell Smith has been appointed international operations manager of Baldwin-Gegenheimer Corp., a manufacturer of printing press accessory equipment. Prior to the Baldwin-Gegenheimer association, Wendell functioned as general sales manager for Barnes Engineering. The Smith family resides in Stamford, Conn, and Wendell and spouse have four children.
The State of California has appointed a new state inheritance tax appraiser, namely Walter Burkley who has been practicing law in Los Angeles. Before he received the new appointment, Walt was a condemnation attorney for the County of Los Angeles. Walt's office is in Pasadena.
Dick Murray has been promoted to assistant vice president at Canal National Bank in Portland, Me. Dick has served in several capacities in the educational division of the American Bankers Association, Portland AIB Chapter, and is a member of the Data Processing Management Association of Maine and the Administrative Management Society.
On the diplomatic front, Bob Richmond has been promoted to Class 5 in the U.S. Foreign Service. Bob's Foreign Service duties have included assignments in Germany and Australia. He is now serving as a commercial officer at the American Embassy in Stockholm, Sweden. Bob and spouse, Helen have three children.
Brevits: Dr. Paul Brenner is associated with the Passavant Memorial Hospital in Chicago, Ill. Dr. Hank Binder, a captain in the Air Force, is stationed at Travis AFB in California. Tom Barker is the minister at the Pilgrim Congregational Church in Scituate, Mass.
The Northern Trust Company, Chicago, has announced the promotion of QuiggPorter to second vice president in the trust department. After Dartmouth and Tuck, Quigg joined the bank in 1958 and was elected assistant secretary in the pension division in 1962. He is a member of the Midwest Pension Conference. Joan and Quigg and their two daughters live in Northbrook, Illinois. Wheaton College's director of dramatics, Tony Dingman has been awarded a Carnegie fellowship to spend a year in residence at Carnegie Institute of Technology. Tony's studies at Carnegie will lead to a Ph.D. in drama.
A letter from Fred Searby relates that Bob Young has temporarily interrupted his professional life in order to start work on the M.B.A. program at Harvard Business School. Bob and spouse, Gretchen whom he married last April, are now living in the Boston area. Speaking of Bob's wedding, George McWilliams was in attendance as an usher.
Moving ahead at W. R. Grace Company is Dick Perkins who has been named to the newly created position of product manager for sealants and adhesives by the Construction Materials Division of Grace's Dewey & Almy Chemical Division. Dick, who has been with Grace since 1959, is currently responsible for product planning, programming, and coordination of marketing programs for caulks, sealants, adhesives, and bonding agents. Dick, his wife and three children reside in Stow, Mass.
Erich Kunzel recently was featured in a "Cincinnati Post" article entitled "Young Man in a Hurry - Erich Kunzel." Erich, - assistant conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra apparently has become quite a well known figure not only in that city but among various music groups around the country. According to the article, "As conductor of the regular series of Young People's and Junior High concerts, Kunzel quickly became a friend of the young audiences through his easy-going informal narratives. He also introduced opera to the youngsters, staging scenes from Mozart's "The Impresario." During the subscription concert season, Kunzel conducted pairs of concerts featuring pianist Byron Janis and violinist Edith Peinimann.
Dr. Dan White, now a captain in the Air Force, recently completed the orientation course for officers of the AF Medical Service at Gunter AFB in Alabama. During his stay at Gunter, Dan received instruction in specialized aerospace medical subjects. Dan's present assignment is with an AF unit in Vietnam.
Norwich University recently appointed Don Spalding as an instructor in Geology. Prior to this new appointment, Don served as a highway geologist for the Connecticut State Highway Department. Don's practical experience includes stratigraphic, petrographic, and paleocurrent work in Maine and Nova Scotia.
Carl Schmidt is another class member who has been promoted to Class Five in the U.S. Foreign Service. Carl is presently assigned to the Department of State as an International Economist. Before the present assignment, Carl was stationed in both Vienna and Salzburg, Austria. Carl and Rika have two children, Dederick, age 4 and Ann, 3.
Toddler Trail: On July 5, Alexander M. Daniels bounced forth to greet the proud parents, Judy and Aaron Daniels. Alexander changed the offspring count to two boys for the Daniels. Last May, Kimberley Susan Welsh became the #1 daughter for Charlotte and Dick Welsh. Kimberley has one brother, Gregory, age 3. Incidentally Papa Dick is a marketing representative in the Data Processing Division of IBM, Denver Region.
The toddler section has been shorted this time. I'm sure many of you '57 wives have been contributing to the world population problems, so let's get the news to your faithful reporter.
Chimes and Bells: The bachelor contingent continues to dwindle. News has been received that the following "old faithfuls" have succumbed to matrimony.
Alden Gifford and Rosamond Fletcher joined forces last July in Lowell, Mass. Rosamond attended Bennington College. The newlyweds are living in Boston.
Bill Uffelman married Nancy Graham last June in Sewickley, Pa. After honeymooning in Hawaii, Bill and Nancy returned to their home in Wilmington, Del., where Bill practices with the law firm, Theisen and Lank.
Also included in the summer matrimonial roundup were John Harper and the former Sally Zachary of Graham, N. C. John and Sally were married in July. Sally, who is a graduate of Elon College in North Carolina, has been teaching at a high school in Alexandria, Va. John practices law with the offices of Downey Rice in Washington, D. C.
