I've been receiving a great deal of mail in response to my pleas of the past few months, for which I am very grateful, so I might as well get right to the news.
Shortly after Christmas I heard from Hank Amon with all the news from Michigan Law. Hank rooms with Paul Pringle out there, and he said that Jeff Davis, RichBloch, Charlie Babington, and Jack McKenna are all first year law students at Michigan too. Hank was very enthusiastic about Michigan in his letter, and he should enjoy it even more next year . . . the reason? Hank became engaged to Miss Deborah Anderson (Penn State) on Dec. 26, and they will be married in June.
Other news from Michigan came from Dave Blaine, a student at Michigan Business School. Dave's letter was filled with oohs and ahs over Cazzie Russel and the Michigan b-ball team - these jocks never change! Dave tentatively plans to leave school in June for the two-year hitch he owes the Navy, and then to return to finish up his MBA study.
Jack Heidbrink writes that all is well at the Univ. of Wisconsin. Brink was quite dismayed that he couldn't see the undefeated Big Green this fall, but he and other envious midwesterners from our Class are recovering. This "Go west, young man . . ." bit has its disadvantages too I guess.
I've also heard from Bob Murphy concerning his engagement to Miss Donna Duquid (Simmons '66). Murph is at Columbia Business School and loves it. He says that the work is difficult, but a great crew of Dartmouth alums are always around for instant conviviality . . . just add booze! Murph ran into Dave Perinchief recently at McSorley's in N.Y.C. when they were both there for Tom Spangenberg's ('64) bachelor party.
Second Lieutenant Steve Brown was recently given the oath of office for a regular commission in the U.S. Air Force. He had previously held a USAF reserve commission as an ROTC graduate, but on the basis of his duty .performance and potential, the Air Force picked him for regular status. He now is a student in the communications officer course at Keesler Air Force Base in Mississippi.
Rocks Lillian and his wife Ann are living in Greenwich Village while Rocks toils for Look magazine by day and burns the night oil at NYU Business School. Rocks is also staying active in skiing and ski jumping, and just recently captured a Class B jumping championship at Bear Mountain, N. Y. Included in Rocks' efforts that day was the longest leap of the day for all classes — 136 feet.
From all I hear there's quite a Dartmouth delegation in the Village. Jim Kingsdale and Jerry Derricks are roomies there. Jim is working for Merrill Lynch this year with an eye toward Harvard Business School in the fall. Jerry is already attending business school at Columbia. Also somewhere in the area is Matt Morrison, happily combining NYU study with ski-bumming and draft dodging. Rick Monahon and Ren Carlisle are two other '65s who frequently gather with the above crew. Mono holds down a number of positions including one as a bouncer at a Third Avenue Irish pub. At last report Ren was with Tiffany's in the city.
Jay Johnston sends word from Hanover that John Kunz is working for Dean Tribus at Thayer School on a project which Jay says "is unexplainable in layman's terms." (If it can be eaten or drunk John, Ed Wynot is definitely a potential investor.) Also, according to Jay, Bill Bourn is doing well in his first year at lowa Med School.
Bob Wildau is in Paris with the Herald Tribune European edition. Bob spent the summer and early fall hitchhiking and motorcycling through Switzerland, Germany, France, and Italy before working for a large oil company under an AIESEC trainee-ship. Bob is very interested in journalism and he seems quite happy with his prospects at the Trib.
Ralph Griffin was one of 30 successful applicants for recent appointment as a U.S. Foreign Service Officer and was sworn into office at a ceremony in the State Department in Washington, D. C. Ralph, who did some advanced work at Ohio State University after graduation, speaks Spanish. By the time this is printed he should have received his assignment to one of the 113 U.S. embassies abroad, or possibly to a desk in Washington.
Now on to the romance trail. . . . JoelFeldman's engagement to Miss Diane Levy (Hunter College) has been announced by her parents. A March 20 wedding is planned. Joel is in his first year at Dartmouth Med.
Dick Bordeau recently became engaged to Miss Jean McGregor (Russell Sage '66). Dick is with General Electric in Schenectady, N. Y. Dick and Jean will be married in June.
Another engagement is Charlie Bailin's to Miss Sharyn Sadugor. Charlie is a student at Western Reserve University School of Medicine. Again a June wedding is planned.
Another June wedding will involve DickTabors and Miss Jean Patton. Dick is doing graduate work at Maxwell School of Syracuse University, while Jean is in her senior year at Smith.
Last on the engagement announcement list is Steve Fowler, who will marry Miss Linda Leonard (Smith). Steve is at Boston University Law School.
Jock Hosmer took the big step over the Christmas holidays and married Miss Ann Scott (Green Mountain '64). Bob Hurd was the best man and Chuck Weil ushed. Jock is a lieutenant with the Army Military Police, and he and his bride are living at Fort Devens, where Jock is stationed.
Ross Newhall also tied the knot over the holidays with Miss Margaret Hackett (Katharine Gibbs).
By the time you read this Dick Kaukas will have married Miss Elizabeth Hutchison in Dares Salaam, Tanzania. Dick and his wife met while training for the Peace Corps at Syracuse this summer, and they are both with the Peace Corps as English teachers.
As you probably know by now, due to all the College publicity concerned with the event, Rich Joseph has been awarded a Rhodes Scholarship for study at Oxford starting next fall. Rich was one of 32 Rhodes recipients. At present he is studying political science at the University of Grenoble on a Fulbright Scholarship.
On the athletic scene, a recent article in the North Carolina State University Alumni mag has many words of praise for PeteCoker, who is one of the mainstays of the Wolfpack basketball team. His coach had this to say about Pete:
"I would say he is the closest thing to the 'Bill Bradley image' there is in these parts. His type only comes around every 15 or 20 years. Pete is a complete basketball player. Maybe not spectacular in any phase of play, but outstanding in all departments." Pete is co-captain of the N.C. State squad this winter.
That's it for this month. Many thanks to all of you who have been keeping in touch; it certainly helps keep the column representative. I hope all is well with each of you - Keep the faith, and plan a return visit to the Green scene soon.
