"The nice thing about the future is that it comes only one day at a time."
The remarkable results we attained in the 1965 Alumni Fund — over $58,000 for 1915 — sets the stage for another "way out" effort this year. Duze Lounsberry and his cohorts have girded for the fray. As Duze puts it: "We did a whale of a job last year — this is no time for one of minnow size." Let's go everybody!
Just prior to leaving New York on their springtime cruise, Howie Fuller received the Honor Certificate Award for his Memorial Day 1965 Address at Forest Lawn by the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge. The itinerary of their cruise found Howie and Adaline spending Easter Sunday in Rome.
A note from the Russ Rices from Georgia tells of rather rough driving weather on the early part of their trip South, but Russ and Bud Doe made up for it later in beach strolling, "birding and shelling," with Bud doing some fishing "without too much success."
Late February found the Marv Fredericks driving to Sarasota, Fla., for a couple of weeks. Marv was planning to be back in New York in time for the Alumni Fund Class Agents' dinner meeting at the Hotel Commodore late in March, at which this scribe planned to be present.
A February card from Pete Pray reported marvelous weather and good swimming at Key Largo (no alligators), Fla. Upon his return in March, Pete said he spent several days with Zeke Carpenter and that JohnnyMullin was making headway at Zero Beach. He also said he had now become addicted to air-conditioned cars and would not be satisfied with anything else - the bloated so-and-so!
Bob Fredericks comes up with an early teen Dartmouth Handbook which contains a dose of nostalgia - particularly a dozen or so Rules for Freshmen which all add up to a "reasonable deference in every way must be shown upper classmen"! ((I always wondered how I escaped the trough! Or did I?)
The annual Kike Richardson fishing safari up to Connecticut Lake in New Hampshire over Washington's Birthday had to get along without Eben Clough this year, due to "official" chores elsewhere. Faint echoes of the trek hint at sub-zero temperatures that wouldn't be believed if we were to quote them. Said echoes make no mention of any fish caught! And, with the new super highways whittling driving time down to two hours flat from Boston to Hanover, Kike's record of never missing a Dartmouth football game is in no danger! And what's this rumor about a 25,000-seat stadium at Hanover?
Reactions from hither and yon to receipts of extraneous snapshots left over after compilation of our 50-Year Book have added to this scribe's pleasant satisfaction in passing them on to the various recipients.
Eben Clough comes up with a baffling essay - "Which Way Is Up?," clarifying the description of a trip up to Augusta which is down in Maine. Almost as lucid as New York City's uptown, downtown, cross town, midtown - which usually lands a stranger at Coney Island!
Talk about zip codes and digits — if anyone can come up with a greater and more varied assortment of code numbers — all the way from Social Security through several Veterans' and Army Service digital insignia — than Doc Noyes, I'm from Missouri! (43 total digits — not including 'phone number!)
A gorgeous color card from Dan Daniell from Florida of beautiful pink azaleas (plus a couple luscious bathing beauties) says he talked with Max Wilcox by phone to Daytona but couldn't make their plans jibe for a get-together. Of the two mermaids, he said he picked the one on the right — and I don't blame him!
Last December, Ev Lamson became a great-grandfather and sent a color picture of the four generations. Ev says - "The bald headed one is me." Ev further reports he's feeling fine and has gone from 120 lbs. to 160 lbs. in two years. Says Ev: "Now the trouble is I'm always hungry, having had to cut out smoking, drinking and 'chasing women,' but still enjoy living and hope to get up to Hanover for the June affair."
A mystery is solved! The fantastic figure pictured on Page 51 of our 50-Year Book turns out to be none other than our versatile classmate - Herb Potter. While he disclaims a flattering likeness, "it was lots of fun at the time" says he. Herb hopes that daughter Julie and their new son-in-law will visit El Paso this summer and reveals that said son-in-law once had a try-out with the Boston Red Sox as a pitcher.
A singular honor was paid to Roy Lafferty by the Dartmouth Club of Essex and Morris in New Jersey when he was presented with their Gold Tomahawk at a memorable dinner on March 19. Accompanying the presentation was a citation - "in recognition of your long and everlasting interest in Dartmouth, the countless hours you have devoted to Dartmouth affairs, and the several generations of young men who had their first contact with the college through you." A corroborative telegram from Director of Athletics Red Rolfe accenting the award was read at the dinner.
Norvie Milmore has lined up an enthusiastic committee for the Interim Reunion June 13 to 16, consisting of Sam Chamberlain, Bob Frothingham, George Simpson, Roy Lafferty, Ruth Winship, Susan Griffith, Margaret Hill, and Kathryn Child, indicating an inviting rendezvous is in the making. All ABOARD!
With which - may we suggest that when a fellow stops to think, he ought to remember to start again! And remember the Alumni Fund!
