We're not exactly overburdened with news this month but what we have is interesting so let's get on with it. Have just received a wonderful article on Marine Lieutenant Colonel Charles Bodley who was recently awarded the Bronze Star with Combat "V" while serving as commanding officer of the 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines, Vietnam. The article is long and interesting and describes the work of his Regimental Landing Team during Operation Starlite from August 18 to 24, 1965. Quoting in part, Charlie "led elements of his battalion into a previously undisputed enemy stronghold... successfully and effectively combining Marine Corps military power and humanitarianism by both clearing enemy pockets of resistance and aiding the civilian population with food, water, and medical care. His thorough understanding of both the military and political operation of Operation Starlite contributed significantly towards the end of reducing Viet Cong influence and increasing the population's confidence in their government and the democratic way of life." No word on Charlie's activities since August but the whole class passes on to him and Pat our best regards and thanks.
Frank Ettari received a note accompanying dues payment from Jim Shute reporting a new addition to their family on October 25, 1965. We hope that young Stephen will show up with his folks at the next reunion.
Had a long letter recently from BillGraulty written after a hard day at the office and several cocktails. In spite of those handicaps, Bill was still sharp enough to straighten me out on a great mistake of reporting in the March issue. It seems that I made a claim that our classmate Don McNally was treasurer of the Connecticut Bank and Trust Company. This is the name that appeared in the article from which I was quoting but, unfortunately, the McNally in the article is a graduate of the University of Connecticut and Harvard Business School. Though the wrong Mr. McNally would probably like to brag about his good fortune, I had better withdraw his "honorary degree" and set the matter straight. Oh well, you can't be right all the time.
John Fairbanks of Newport, N. H., has made another impressive move in the State judicial body. He has been named - to the Administrative Committee of District and Municipal Courts by the New Hampshire Supreme Court. John graduated from Boston University Law School after Dartmouth, moved back to his native state and has been one of the main cogs of this thriving community for quite a few years.
Had a wonderful visit with Tom Tanner, all the way from Milwaukee with his family. Not having been back to Hanover since graduation, Tom wanted Jean and his three children to get a first-hand view of the institution he's been raving about for some years. Tom is a very successful president of the Zenith Foundry Company in West Allis, Wis. It was good to see them up here and we hope they make a return visit soon.
Hope you all caught the ad for the Rhode Island Development Council in a recent issue of the New York Times featuring Harvey White, president of Puritan Aerosol Corporation. We wonder what is getting into these advertising geniuses when they feature a man rather than a pretty girl. Seriously, it's encouraging to see that one of our classmates is being touted as one of the reasons business should move to Rhode Island.
My thanks to Ed Davis for sending a copy of the American Material Handling Society, Inc. year book dedicated last year to Joseph H. Kraatz. In a letter accompanying the year book Ed said "a friend and hardworking, fun-loving fellow. In business he was extremely successful, in the fun area there will be legends that will grow with the years." Joe was quite a man in all respects - we shall miss him.
Word received recently that Lieutenant Commander Don Fitzsimmons has finally left the lush, plush Mediterranean and returned to the States. Welcome back, Don - hope you find your life here as interesting as I know it has been abroad. From the date of the address change it appears that you made it back in time for a taste of cold weather. Hope you survived the change.
That seems to do it for this month so come one, come all - help to fill up the mailbox.
Best regards from the hills.
