Having just returned from a long day on the slopes, the body is tired but the spirit is willing, so here we go. It's so nice to have good skiing so early in the year that everyone wants to take full advantage of it and acts as though each day were the last of the season. It's nice to know that the North Country economy is booming and the area is full of smiles. I hope that the same conditions exist by the time you read these words but maybe that's too much to ask for. At any rate, it's great fun now. Incidentally, we've already seen a goodly number of alumni taking advantage of the Dartmouth Skiway, particularly during Christmas vacation. Haven't had the pleasure of seeing any '46's to date but hope for an improvement in that situation in the months ahead.
Turning to the news, I see that Bill Riley entered the political field last fall as a campaign manager for Kenneth O'Donnell in his home town of Medford, Mass. Bill is still a very successful salesman for a Somerville automobile dealer and is one of the better-known hockey officials in the area. He has officiated at games throughout North America and in Europe. Hockey is still a major subject in the Riley family, particularly with Bill Jr. doing a great job at Boston University, and not bothering to hold back at all when he plays against his father's alma mater. It was great seeing Bill and Bev here in Hanover during the fall and we look forward to more visits during the hockey season.
In other political news last fall, SteveWeekes ran a hot campaign for re-election as State Representative in Harwich Port, Mass. I do not know how he made out but was impressed with his stand on the Massachusetts tax program. How about filling us in on the results, Steve.
Also back in the fall, Jim Lynch was elected vice president and general sales manager of the Aimcee Wholesale Corporation in Connecticut. Jim was previously general manager of the AWC California office, having come up through that organization as a salesman and with previous experience as a buyer at Abraham & Strauss. Jim and his wife Arianna and their three children live in Darien, Conn.
With a long history in education, most recently at the University of Chicago, Dr.William Fowler has joined the faculty of Yeshiva University's Ferkauf Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Following his education at Dartmouth, Bill received his master's degree from Harvard and his Ph.D. from Chicago in 1959. He has been involved with teaching, research, and as an educational consultant since that time.
John Barker is now general advertising manager of the Hamilton Watch Co. in Lancaster, Pa. John was assistant sales director of Hamilton's Wallace Sterling Division which he joined in 1948. He held a variety of sales positions before being appointed to the sales management post in 1961. He and Nancy and their three girls live in Lancaster where John is active in the County United Campaign, Junior Achievement, and the Parent Teachers Association.
Knox Phagan has been appointed vice president and commercial loan officer at the Security Trust Company in Rochester, N. Y. With previous background in the investment and banking business, Knox went with Security Trust in 1961 and has enjoyed a rapid rise to the top since that time. Dick Hartman has also climbed further up the ladder, having been named a second vice president at Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company in Springfield. Dick has been with Mass. Mutual since he graduated from Tuck and has had a very successful career in the investment end of that huge company. In 1963 he was advanced to investment secretary and was made a senior officer of the company. From previous visits with Dick, I know that he is very active in civic affairs and is currently a member of the Wilbraham School Committee. Ben Moats, our energetic Reunion Chairman, was recently named vice president of marketing for the Fanny Farmer Candy Shops, Inc. in Cambridge, Mass. Ben is continuing his career as a topflight marketing executive and I am sure he will devote a considerable amount of his talent to our June reunion. As mentioned last month, it sounds like a winner so be sure to be a part of the happy throng.
Dr. Hugh MacNamee, who recently discontinued his active pediatric practice and returned to a very specialized training in child psychiatry, is already active as a participant in a recent symposium on child care in his home town of New London, Conn. Dr. Mac, as he is formally known by hundreds of young patients, is a wonderful example of a man dedicated to helping our children and who was willing and, indeed, happy to give up an extremely successful career to accomplish it. Keep up the wonderful work, Mac.
That does it for news this month - the mailbox is still mighty empty but this time I will not raise a big fuss. If nothing comes in during the next month you may be treated to a discourse on the joys of skiing or, possibly, the problems in trying to keep up with a couple of teen-age whizzes.
Cannot close without a final reminder to get your dues in to Frank Ettari and to pay real attention to all reunion announcements.
Best regards from the hills.
