These closing words for the summer are pieced together at that familiar landmark, The Green Lantern, located in the heart of downtown Hanover, N. H. I wish I could package some of this wonderful air," this Hanover is a revitalizer.
Yes, 1946 representatives returned to campus with 50 other class counterparts for an Alumni Officers' meeting. Back for us were Bob Kimball, Treasurer, with Jackie who has been a real force in '46 efforts and Jean and Jack Whitman, the latter having lost 25 pounds since the start of his energetic successful Alumni Fund campaign. Jean showed me imprints of the alphabet on her fingers from all that typing for the Fund. The College never looked better. We hit one of those clear, clean spring weekends, activity galore, a new lease on life. Secretaries, treasurers and agents met in different sessions. The entire Alumni Fund is ahead of last year's record breaker. Bob Kimball deftly applied his ingenuity to save the Class some money. The Secretaries' session heard Charlie Widmayer's excellent talk on new ideas for the MAGAZINE next year. Also discussed were plans for more effective reunions. The Class of 1951's Secretary has reached all 560 members by personal letter. Wow, what a pacesetter. Sid Hayward '26 recognized our class of '46 with its 900 members as a unique challenge to take its rightful position in Dartmouth affairs. Your committee set up these guide posts:
1. John Rankin is most generously setting up our whole class on IBM cards with complete status. From this we will select geographical area representatives. This will give us a complete working unit for Alumni Fund, news and dues.
2. Bob Kimball is setting up plans to get more '46s to gather in their home localities.
3. Jack Whitman suggested getting more of us into the act on various activities. You'll be hearing from me personally on this.
4. Three members of the Executive Committee will work with Bob next year to do follow-up letters on dues.
5. The 25-year gift to the College cannot be started until after our 10th Reunion. We have a good start on plans for this thanks to a lot of work on the part of Herm Schulting, GusGillaugh and Chuck Reardon. These plans are on file in readiness.
The Dartmouth Club of Springfield sent George Hopkins' to the sessions with his wife Mildred. George is doing a top job for Massachusetts General on group insurance. DickUnser with his wife and little boy were here for the Dartmouth Club of Albany.
News aplenty. Just learned that Jack VanCleve is now with Lord and Taylor. Jack, with family, which includes two daughters, is living in Short Hills, N. J. Ted Fajen was last re- ported with six vacuum cleaners under his arm heading for one of his big accounts. Faj was a manufacturer's representative, but has since switched to Nesco Inc., makers of fine electrical appliances. Patty Fajen is expecting a new baby right about now. Bill Trump is applying his good business acumen and his Dartmouth Broadcasting System experience to a radio station in Milwaukee. Frank Ettari took time off from hauling his coal to Con Edison to have lunch at the Dartmouth Club. Pat and Frank just had their third, a little girl, Mary Patricia. Frank sees ShipwreckKelley in Boston regularly and reports that Connie and Bob Albrecht are now living in Cooper Village in New Rochelle, N. Y. A most interesting letter from that dynamo Bob Poet tells us he is out in Park Forest, Illn line with the high fertility of the era, he and Liz just had a second boy, Kevin James, born on St. Patrick's day. Their first boy's name is Robert. Bob says he has spent the year learning to plant shrubs in front of his new house which is his first exercise in three years. He is a District Representative for G.E. Bob also tells me that Don and Rosemary Alvarez and their daughter Linda Lee are now in San Mateo, Calif. He's with the Marathon Paper Co. That's nice living on that peninsula, Don. The Hanover Inn snagged Jack Copenhaver from Dallas, Tex. for a night's rest and ValeVan Otteren and wife were also aboard. Saw Walt Snickenberger in Hanover. He, Mary and Small Snick are out of the Marines and going Boston way where Walt will probably return to F. S. Webster Co.
Kudos to Hal Ellis who was just awarded a James B. Reynolds Foreign Scholarship for 1952-3. He will study and do research at University of Dublin in the modern political history of Ireland. Hal just completed graduate work at Stanford University. Bob Grant had his own composition, "My Evening Prayer, played on NBC TV. This was an all-star show, opened with an address by President Truman for the American Red Cross. Bob just finished his second composition called "Dartmouth Carnival Song." He is still at Cushing Veterans hospital in Boston.
Mary and Colin Gunn just sent a little ordnance notice. They had a little girl and the announcement tied it into a new gun production report mentioning its feature of automatic loading. They are living in Westport, Conn. Colin just passed his Bar Exams and graduates from the University of Connecticut in Tune. Nice shooting, Gunns.
Bill DeStefano sends word of his engagement to Alice Wimmer of Oxford, Pa. Plans are for an August wedding. Bill is a full lieutenant and is teaching at the U.S. Naval Preparatory School in Bainbridge, Md. GeorgeRiley is engaged to Janet Bligh of Torrington, Conn. Johnny Alden is being married this month to Joan Keller of Wellesley Hills. May I say that Nancy and I just had a baby girl, Polly Marion, to add to our two tigers Regbo and Crawf.
Be back in the fall, that's all.
