The new year's competition begins for the swimming team January 7 against Brown. Michael had sent his team home for the Christmas vacation after lopsided victories over Pennsylvania, 72-23, and Williams, 63-32. He brought them back December 28 for workouts. Ahead on the road to the contest with usually invincible Yale in mid-February lay, consecutively, Harvard, Princeton, Army and Cornell.

"They are all tough," Michael said, "but this year we have a good chance against all of them."

Michael's optimism is based on the variety and depth of his squad, which includes 21 sophomores from last year's undefeated freshman team. These swimmers hold 80 records among them.

Team captain is Tony Dalrymple '67 of Goffstown, N. H., a freestyler. He is getting help from classmates Peter Hayes of South Bend, Ind., and John Van Orden of Albany, N. Y.; juniors Brad Lindeblad, Hollywood, Fla., and Chris Meigher, Schenectady, N. Y., and sophomore freestylers Terry Robinson, Rye, N. Y.; Dave Jackson, Tulsa, Okla.; Jim Becker, Cleveland Heights, Ohio; Jud Graves, Jacksonville, Fla., and Chuck Horner, Wichita, Kan.

Hayes is back in action after having spent last year studying in Russia.

The distance freestyle is being handled by Meigher and sophomores Dick Hinman of Winnetka, Ill., and Clint Harris of Prospect, N. Y.

Lindeblad, a top sprinter, took a fourth place last spring in the National AAU Championships in Florida, and Robinson, who can handle any distance from 100 to 500 yards, is regarded by Michael as "the best freestyler who ever came to Dartmouth."

Three sophomores and a junior hold down the backstroke department. They are Al Petersen, Byram, Conn.; Tom Greist, Indianapolis, Ind., and Jim Janney, Ladue, Mo., all '69s, and Mark Battin '68, Elyria, Ohio.

The 100- and 200-yard butterfly events are being swum by Bob Stewart '67, Saginaw, Mich., Morgan Allsup '69, Bloomington, Ill., and Chuck Hodgson, Miami Springs, Fla.

Don Wehrung '67, Tonawanda, N. Y., and Mike Harvey '69, Arlington, Va., are racing conventional breaststroke.

Diving is the strongest it has ever been at Dartmouth, with four men nearly interchangeable as Number One. They are Nat Fuller '67, Duluth, Minn.; Dick Harwood '68, Bloomington, Ill.; Marc Labovitz '69, Philadelphia, Pa., and Jay Glaser '69, Denver, Colo.
