It was a great fall reunion. Early arrivals burned up the golf course literally with Sam Wormser getting a hole in one! How about that? Friday evening we gathered at Hopkins Center and are glad to report the new freshman class shows much drive and ingenuity. A tremendous bonfire in the center of the campus resulted from their roaming the North Country and into Maine for railroad ties. The Injunaires added to '27's evening in great fashion.
Dow Mills was the winner of the farthest away award. He and Alice having driven on from Rochester, Minn. Bob Long and Franchot came in from Rochester, N. Y. Coggy Broer and Sue with daughter Linda also drove a few miles to get there.
Doane Arnold and Marie came up early to see how Doane Jr., new freshman, is shaking down. He and Andrew Meyercord, Ken's son, are the only '27 sons in the freshman class. Thursday night Marie slipped and fell coming out of the Inn and had a banged-up nose. Marion Bury duplicated the tumble the next afternoon on the way up, and she gave Marie a little company with her bruises and bandages.
Everyone was happy that Dorothy Cleveland, Red's widow and daughter Dot, came to fall reunion. Dorothy has given a blood testing machine and a beautiful picture of Dartmouth Hall to Dick's House in Red's memory. You other girls should follow Dot's example and join the class activities. She was so appreciative of how she was welcomed and included in the activities that she phoned me a few days later to have me tell you of her gratitude.
Saturday we held a breakfast and class meeting with the girls joining. Mike Choukas is being sent the minutes for Speakeasy inclusion. Incidentally, we missed Gertrude who was home nursing a cold.
Doc Milliken and Gladys are making Hanover and '27 doings a regular item on their catalogue, 3 times the past year. Other regulars who were with us, Ed Baker and Ruth, Reg Vincent and Anna. Bill Prescott and Kay did some late evening entertaining at the Sunset. We all were glad to have our Assistant Fall Reunion Chairman LoveyLovegrove back in action and looking great after a coronary this past summer. JackSheldon and Janet here from Michigan and my notes mention "sideburns" not Jack's but some story of his. I'll have to ask him. Doc Greener had to renege at the last minute, not feeling too well, and his reservation at the Sunset was taken by CharleyHuntley's brother!
At the class meeting we displayed the many photos of the Pine Tree 40th. The class authorized your secretary to continue the publication effort. Still getting a few straggling questionnaires. Will have over 100 pages of pictures, so put a penny now and then in the piggy bank. The Report will come to you, eventually I hope, and will be accompanied by a touch to pay the piper - or the printer rather.
Following class meeting, we all gathered at the New Pine for lunch and a replay of Bob Stevens' and Bill North's dedication talks. Doane, Phil and I heard them for the first time, since originally, we were in hiding in the woods before our Peerade. PresidentMullin mounted the '27 boulder, which makes a good platform for either feet or fanny, and presented to "One Hole" Wormser a" bottle of champagne in recognition of his golfing prowess. This is a great locale for a '27 event.
Phil Fowler and Madeline, Fall Reunion Chairman (?), provided derbys for the boys and straw hats for the girls, and following Phil's coon coat we proceeded to the game. Sam Martin's protege from Salem, Ore. - Koenig - will make Dartmouth football history, we think.
Much fun at Saturday night dinner at the Montshire. Jack Sheldon MC'd the golf awards: Phil Fowler, first prize man; DoaneArnold did something right, or several things, and got a prize; Alyce Wormser, first girls' prize and Madeline Fowler, second prize. (After all, the committee works real hard.) Ding Heap had the most something, and of course Sam Wormser got a big hand again.
Jay Willing and Marion, Ted Girault, Paul Hannah and Betty, Larry Scammon and Ora, Steve Tracy, the Bob Pages, Peg and Bob Funkhouser, Frank Strongs, Bunny Smiths, Hank Murrays, along with lots of others were delightfully entertained by the full Al Foley '20 performance. Actually it was a recording session - look for a record later of "The Unchanging College" and "Vermont Humor" - great.
I go to press after a phone call from Ken Murray who tells me Bob Stevens is in Dick's House for some tests. Wrote Peg and will give detail as received. In the meantime, hope all is well, Bob.
