In addition to the fact that summer is a wonderful time of year in New Hampshire it is also a time when your secretary gets a couple of months off from writing his monthly column which gives him a fighting chance to accumulate a little news. The summer has been reasonably productive so the current column will be no problem, but if you don't start writing before October 5 we may go back to very abbreviated newsletters.
One wedding to report: Steve Winship and Miss Marion Lord of Cambridge, Mass., were married in Gilford, N. H., on July 20. The new Mrs. Winship is a graduate of Skidmore, and prior to her marriage was coordinator of the Muscular Distrophy Associations of America in the Boston area.
New jobs and promotions: In June, HalNewell was named manager of government relations for Eaton, Yale and Towne, Inc. and put in charge of their new office at 1875 Connecticut Avenue in Washington, D. C. Hal has been with Eaton, Yale and Towne since 1953 and has been assistant sales manager since 1963. His new assignment requires that he move from the Cleveland area to Washington, but as yet no new address has been received for him.
Also in June, John McMaster was appointed senior architect for Facilities Projects by Eastern Airlines. After attending Princeton and Dartmouth he received his degree in architecture from Auburn University in 1950. Prior to joining Eastern he had practiced architecture in Fair Lawn and Hawthorne, N. J., and had been employed by the Sinclair Refining Company in New York City. At last reports John and his family, which includes a son and a daughter were living in Fair Lawn.
Steele Brown was recently elected president of the Industrial Chemicals Division of Allied Chemical Corporation. Steele has been with Allied Chemical since graduation and has served in various production capacities for the corporation's former General Chemicals Division. Steele's family are all ardent sailors and cruising the New England coast is a favorite summer pasttime.
Fred Leopold, incumbent mayor, was reelected last spring to his second term on the City Council of Beverly Hills, Calif.
Dick Hill, who recently broke ground for the First National Bank's new office building in Boston, has been named a director of the John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company and a vice president of the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce.
Included in last spring's graduating class from the Harvard Business School Advanced Management Program were Stu Wallace and Joe Loveland.
Dr. Bill David, Professor of Political Science at Western Maryland College, spent the past summer studying the Tamil language which is spoken in the Madras state of India. Bill was studying at the University of Pennsylvania under a National Defense Foreign Language Fellowship. He hopes to return to India to continue his study of the political process at the state level. He attended a summer institute on Indian civilization in India in 1964 and spent the 1964-65 school year there on sabbatical leave. He had a Fulbright Award and Ford Foundation aid for his work there, and spent the year in and around Bangalore, capital of Mysore State, doing research on the relationship of the Central Government of India and the Indian States. For a number of years, Bill has participated in a Ford Foundation sponsored Asian Studies Program which was a joint project of six colleges.
Unc Richardson, executive vice president of Eaton and Howard, Inc. has been named president of Eaton and Howard Growth Fund, Inc. and Eaton and Howard Special Fund, Inc., the two newest mutual funds managed and underwritten by his firm.
Lee Cone has been appointed assistant to the president of Gordon College and Gordon Divinity School. Lee joined the Gordon staff in 1961 while a student in the Divinity School and was named business manager in 1963. In 1966 he received the Bachelor of Divinity Degree from Gordon. Lee and his wife Eleanor and three of their daughters are residing in Hamilton, Mass.
Governor David Cargo of New Mexico has appointed Les Davis to that state's Development Advisory Board. Les is president and general manager of the Charles Springer Cattle Company and operates one of the oldest ranches in New Mexico, dating back to 1878. He was president of the New Mexico Cattle Growers Association in 1965 and is also on the Board of Directors of the Albuquerque National Bank and the First National Bank of Raton. He is also president of the Cimarron school board.
Walt Lipman has recently joined Baer, Stearns & Co., members of the New York Stock Exchange, as vice president in charge of real estate. He was formerly director of real estate of Colt Industries, Inc. in charge of construction of plants in Illinois, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Connecticut.
Les Overlock, who has been president and chief executive officer of Old Town Corp., Brooklyn-based manufacturers of office supplies and office copying machines since 1964. has resigned as an officer and a director of Old Town but plans to remain with that firm as a consultant.
One of Ed Stone's stable of thoroughbreds pulled another upset early last summer at Rockingham Park in New Hampshire. His three-year-old filly named "Incassable" out-ran an odds on favorite to win the Lost River Handicap.
The United States Lawn Tennis Association recently selected the Art Hills family as "Regional Tennis Family of the Year," and their qualifications for this honor are certainly most impressive. Art has been New England champion in both the 35 year and over 45 men's doubles, and has been nationally ranked in Father and Son Championships with son Jeffrey, 23, and son Gerry, 22. Dot is a former New England Singles champion and has been ranked as one of the top ten women tennis players in New England for the past seventeen years. Son Michael, now 18, was a New England champion at the age of 11. The older boys have been enrolled in Hanover, and the youngest joined them there this fall. Not only do they play at the game, they work at it. Art is a founder member of the Winchester Junior Veterans Championship, a former vice chairman of the National Doubles Championship, a past Treasurer of the Longwood Cricket Club, and presently captain of two intersectional teams from New England. Dot is a member of the executive committee of the New England Lawn Tennis Association, was former chairman of the Women's Committee of the National Doubles Championship and has run the New England Junior Championships for several years. She also coaches youngsters in the sport.
I'm sorry that I must close these notes with the report of the death of two more classmates. Dick Fisher passed away at his home in New Canaan, Conn., on last June 13, and John Beaumont died five days later in New York City. The deepest sympathies of the class are extended to both of their families,
