Believe it or not, this installment of the '65 Odyssey is being drafted in the history reading room of the Cleveland Public Library. I've discovered in the past couple of years, as I've traveled on behalf of the Phillips Exeter Academy, that when one goes on the road one gets to a lot of places that ordinarily one wouldn't frequent - thus, Mahoney at the library. Necessity has played a role in this union too; the fact that the copy for this column is due in Hanover three days before I'm scheduled to return to Exeter from my travels has induced me to take "advantage of a few free hours and Cleveland's public facilities. However, the amount of news that I have to relay to you about our classmates makes my task a joyous one.
It seems as though wedding news will never wear out. One of the latest to go under is Jerry Putnam. On August 17 he married Miss Jane Berger, and they now make their home in Brighton, Mass. Jane is teaching school in Newton while Jerry spends his last year at Tufts Med.
Incidentally, two of our other classmates have just completed the Dartmouth-Tufts trail. On the same day, Zach Hahn received his Master's degree from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy there, and Jeff Newton garnered his M.D. Jeff will intern in Denver.
Brad Hills and Roddy Powers used the buddy system for their weddings this past summer. On June 22 Roddy was Brad's best man at his marriage to Miss Fran Gibson (UVM '66) in Schenectady, N. Y. Roddy's fiancee was one of Fran's bridesmaids. A week later Roddy married Miss Diane Curtis (UVM '66) in Brattleboro, Vt., with Brad serving as an usher and Fran as matron of honor.
The Hills are living in Cornish, N. Y., while Brad reports for the "Claremont Daily Eagle" and Fran teaches in the Claremont school system. Roddy and Diane are making their home in Dallas, Texas, where he is a materials analyst with the Texas Instrument Company.
Frank Bellizia has changed addresses within the Bay State. He spent the summer teaching in the ABC program at Williams College, and is now teaching English and developmental reading at Mt. Greylock Regional H.S. in Williamstown, Mass. ABC, for those of you who don't remember it from our Dartmouth days, is a program designed to place underprivileged boys and girls in independent schools and then to provide them in the summer with academic preparation for those schools. A worthy pursuit, and ABC does a marvelous job at it.
I've recently supped with Bob and FrenchMcConnaughey in Washintgon, D. C. Bob graduated from UVA Law School in June and is presently clerking for a federal judge in D. C., while his bride is involved in remedial education.
Tim and Carol McLaughlin hosted me on one of my recent journeys, and I found them content and prosperous in the Cleveland suburbs. Tim is with Smith, Barney, and is an extremely active member of the Cleveland Athletic Club and a local rugby group. They're looking forward to being among the first to arrive for our reunion next spring.
One of the most significant bits of news is about Palmer C. D. Wooglin. After three and one half years of correspondence courses he has been awarded the first degree in law, and is employed by the Spanish Anti-defamation League spearheading its suit against the Frito Bandito.
A recent note from Dave Blaine an- nounced his wedding in August to Miss Donna DeRose of Georgia. He has just completed a two-year Navy hitch, and is back at the Univ. of Michigan Business School. Donna teaches second grade in the Ann Arbor school system. Dave mentioned that both Gary Herbst and George Martin are also enrolled at the B-School there.
The guys of whom I have the most recent news are the ones with whom I'm working on the reunion. We're in constant communication with each other, so I'm able to keep pretty close tabs on them. SteveWaterhouse has just returned to his work at Procter and Gamble in Quincy, Mass., after six months as a pharmacist specialist with an Army Reserve Medical Unit. Jock Hosmer now lives in Durham, N. H., and is on the first year of a graduate assistantship at the UNH Business School. His assistantship involves assisting with admissions and recruiting for the B-School, and those of you who are anticipating a return to' the books in search of a MBA might want to be in touch with him.
Brent Rogers has been awarded a Woodrow Wilson dissertation fellowship. He is studying history at Johns Hopkins.
One of New Hampshire's newest residents is Bob Hurd, who is putting his B.U. law degree to work as clerk of the New Hampshire Supreme Court in Concord.
Richard Foster is also a full-fledged barrister now, having received his JD from Vanderbilt last spring. He's presently a legal advisor with the Tennessee Legislative Council in Nashville.
Back at the altar, Frank Hershenson and Miss Miriam Ratner (Syracuse) were wed in July. He is a B.C. Law School grad.
Mike Orr and Bill Webster were there to support Gordy Hamlin when he married Miss Julia Keiser (Pine Manor and Katy Gibbs) this past summer. They're (just the bride and groom) living in Litchfield, Conn.
A meeting of the minds is the only way to describe the marriage of Ken Lieberthal to Miss Jane Lindsay last June. Jane was a Phi Beta at Douglass, has studied at the Univ. of Geneva, and is now a master's candidate in political science at Columbia. Oh yea, she's also studying for a certificate in East Asian Studies. But she pales next to her hubby's academic portfolio. Ken has won at Columbia two National Defense Foreign Language Fellowships in Chinese, the East Asian Institute Honors Fellowship, and a Herbert H. Lehmann Fellowship. He has received an M.A. in Chinese Communist Affairs, an Institute Certificate in Chinese Studies, and now is pursuing a doctorate in Comparative Politics. — Do not pass go, do not collect two hundred dollars!
Birger Benson, a captain in the Army, has recently been assigned to the ROTC Instructor Group at the University of Vermont. He is a Viet Nam vet, and was also formerly an instructor at Fort Benning, Ga. He is qualified Airborne and Ranger.
That's about all there is to tell. Again, I cannot urge you strongly enough to make an effort to reserve the weekend of June 20-22, 1969 for our class festivities in Hanover. Our plans coupled with the College's bicentennial activities should insure a very active, enlightening, and fun three days.
