Coach Whitey Burnham's lacrosse squad opened its 1968 season on a brighter note than a year ago, enjoying warm spring sunshine for the entire southern trip. The Green met several teams in scrimmages, while splitting the results of two games, against the University of Virginia and Baltimore. It met Virginia on the third day of outdoor play this spring, and lost 13-5 after playing a strong first half. In the next contest, against a perennially strong Baltimore squad, Dartmouth won as the result of four quarters of truly outstanding play, 6-5. In spite of their limited outdoor action, the Indians functioned as a unit, with senior All-American honorable mention attackman Rob McCormick whipping in the winning tally with 2:30 remaining in the final period. Another senior, midfielder Bill Rich had a hat trick against Baltimore, and two points against the University of Virginia.
Regular season play led off against Ivy lacrosse power Brown at Providence, and the Indians were unable to match the potent Bruin attack. Brown leapt off to its 13-4 victory by scoring in the first 31 seconds, and often thereafter. Dartmouth, thin again this season on the bench, also had problems keeping up with the Bruins' quality depth, as 11 different host players scored. Once again Bill Rich, Lexington, Mass., netted a hat trick for the Green. Against Yale, in the first home game of 1968, the Indians opened powerfully, winning the opening face-off and scoring 53 seconds later on a bounce shot by sophomore Carl Andros. From then on however, the Bulldogs began to assert themselves, leading 5-3 at the half. Numerous Indian errors in the final half of play contributed to the lopsided 12-4 Yale win. Missing from the cast for this game was defensive standout Jeff Norton, who was injured earlier in the week.
Last season the Green went winless against Ivy League opponents. With an improved squad both offensively and defensively, Dartmouth could move up in the league if the thin but talented squad remains healthy.
